Oscar-Winning Alum Scott Stokdyk Will Discuss Creating Digital Versions of Actors in Sept. 14 Talk

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Scott Stokdyk '91/92, Academy Award winner for achievement in visual effects for "Spider-Man 2," will discuss the technology of creating computer graphics versions of actors as "digital doubles" during his presentation Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in Galileo Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

StokdykStokdyk's talk will kick off the fall Bruce J. Nelson '74 Distinguished Speaker Series, which will feature topics related to technology and entertainment. He will show the techniques that Sony Pictures Imageworks used during "Spider-Man 2" and discuss them in the context of the visual effects done for the movie.

Stokdyk's 2005 Oscar for "Spider-Man 2" was his third nomination for visual effects. He was also nominated for the first "Spider-Man" movie in 2002 and for "Hollow Man" in 2000. His visual effects career has included such projects as "Titanic," "Terminator 2:3D" (Universal Studios special effects show), "Fifth Element" and "Polar Express."

He joined Sony Pictures Imageworks in 1998 and worked as a digital artist on "Starship Troopers" and "Contact." He was the computer graphics supervisor for "Godzilla" and supervised more than 100 shots on "Stuart Little." Work is currently underway for the May 2007 release of Spider-Man 3.
