Jul 17, 2005 - Claremont, Calif. -

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) selected students from Harvey Mudd College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as winners of the 2005 SIAM Award in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) at the SIAM annual meeting in New Orleans July 11–15.

Established in 1988, the prize is awarded to two of the teams judged "Outstanding in the annual MCM." One winning team of students is chosen for each of the problems posed in the MCM.

HMC students Clay Hambrick '05, Katrina Lewis '05 and Lorraine Thomas '05 were named the 2005 winners of Problem A, The Continuous Problem, "Flood Planning." Their faculty advisor was HMC Assistant Professor of Mathematics Jon T. Jacobsen,

SIAM was founded in 1952 to support and encourage the important industrial role that applied mathematics and computational science play in advancing science and technology. SIAM’s 2005 annual meeting themes included control, biological modeling, dynamics of interfaces, finance, large-scale simulation, and linear algebra.
