Norman R. Augustine to Lecture on Ethical Leadership

Dec 20, 2006 - Claremont, Calif. - Norman R. Augustine will deliver the Dr. Bruce J. Nelson '74 Distinguished Speaker Series lecture at Harvey Mudd College on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 7 p.m. in Galileo Hall.

Augustine will be on campus as the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Visiting Professor in Leadership and Management. The professorships are funded by the Leadership Development Fund, an endowment created by the Annenberg Foundation in honor of alumnus and trustee Howard Deshong III '89.

Former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp., Augustine chaired the National Academies' Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century. Comprising scientists, academic leaders and business executives, the committee created the groundbreaking report "Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future."

The report served as a dire warning to the U.S. about how the lack of investment in education and research could severely damage the American economy. The report urged the U.S. to view scientific and technological education and achievement as a critical priority. The report was developed under the aegis of the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy, a joint unit of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.

Augustine serves on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and has received the National Medal of Technology. He has held lead positions in several industries, including the Douglas Aircraft Company, LTV Missiles and Space Company, Martin Marietta Corporation, Lockheed Martin Corporation and the U.S. government, notably as undersecretary of the U.S. Army. He has served as a lecturer at Princeton University and as a chairman and principal officer of the American Red Cross.

An integral part of the college's mission statement, developing ethical leadership is a fundamental component of the education provided at Harvey Mudd College. The Walter and Lenore Annenberg Visiting Professorship in Leadership and Management began this year, and advocates and develops the HMC vision of cultivating in students a strong sense of principled governing.

The lecture is part of the Dr. Bruce J. Nelson '74 Distinguished Speaker Series that in spring 2007 will feature the Annenberg Visiting Professors. The series will feature visits by highly influential and prominent business executives and government officials. Each Annenberg Visiting Professor will teach part of an ongoing class in leadership; hold seminars and discussions for students, faculty and administrators; and deliver a public lecture based on personal experience making tough ethical decisions.
