Leonard '12 is BMES Student Award Winner

Aug 18, 2011 - Claremont, Calif. - Elissa Leonard '12 of Haddonfield, N.J., was named a winner of a Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) 2011 Undergraduate Student Award, designed to provide encouragement and recognition for students’ academic achievements. The BMES serves as the world's leading society of professionals devoted to developing and using engineering and technology to advance human health and well-being.

For the past three semesters and two summers, Leonard has worked on the Corneal Tissue Engineering project with Elizabeth Orwin, associate professor of engineering. Orwin and her student researchers are working on designing a tissue engineered artificial corneal model, a complicated problem that few undergraduate colleges are undertaking. Designing an artificial cornea is a multidisciplinary problem that benefits from input from all departments. “Most of the students working on this project end up doing graduate-level research. I think it is great that students get to work on such a cutting-edge problem,” said Orwin. The idea is to make a new cornea out of cells and some kind of matrix material or biological polymer, not unlike you would find in your skin or eye, she said.

Leonard is majoring in an Independent Program of Study (biomolecular systems and design), is the president of the Mudd art club "MuCC" (Mudd Creative Collective) and is involved in many other art-related activities.

Selected as an HMC President's Scholar as a first-year student, Leonard hopes to attend graduate school for a Ph.D. in cell, tissue or biomolecular engineering, then continue doing research in that field, probably in an academic environment. President's Scholars are outstanding young men and women who have the potential to be future leaders in the STEM fields. The College seeks individuals who have not only a proven track record of academic success, but also display intellectual curiosity, an exceptional sense of responsibility, self-reliance and a potential for leadership and contribution to Harvey Mudd College.

Leonard was one of five undergraduate winners. The BMES Awards Committee selects undergraduate students on the basis of originality, significance, thoroughness of design analysis, and performance evaluation. It selects up to five graduate students on the basis of scientific merit, originality, and quality of written presentation.

The awards will be presented to the awardees at the BMES Annual Business Meeting in Hartford, Conn, Oct. 12-15. Undergraduate awards include a certificate, a complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting, and a stipend to assist with travel expenses.
