Honor and Celebrate Prof. Moody's Legacy

Michael Moody

Dear Friends,

The Department of Mathematics—and many students, faculty, staff and friends within its community—have benefited from the extraordinary legacy contributed by Michael Moody. During his time at Harvey Mudd College, the mathematics department revised the core curriculum, rejuvenated the senior thesis program and tripled the number of majors. Moody founded an evening lecture series that brought speakers to the college that illuminated the joy, mystery and applicability of mathematics and that attracted hundreds of students. The department credits Moody as the guiding force that led to them being awarded the American Mathematical Society’s inaugural award for an Exemplary Program or Achievement in a Mathematics Department in 2006.

The Department, the college, and I are enthusiastic about recognizing Michael for his achievements and his contributions to the college. We would like to preserve, celebrate, and perpetually renew Michael’s impact by naming in his honor the long-standing Harvey Mudd College Evening Mathematics Lecture Series.

Please join me in making a contribution in order to help us achieve that goal. The funds contributed will help us support the outstanding caliber of lecturers which Michael helped attract to the department and allow us to potentially support other activities in Michael’s name that would enhance the department in ways that will make him proud. Our ambitious goal is to raise a total of $250,000 to establish a new departmental endowment that will enable us to preserve and extend Mike’s impact on the college in perpetuity and allow us to formally name the Michael Moody Mathematics Lecture Series.

In order to thrive and excel, the college and the department still require your generous gifts to the HMC Annual Fund this year. Please contribute actively to the Annual Fund again this year, as it supports our faculty, our student's scholarships and more. Your ongoing support is essential.

In addition, I ask you to join me in making a very special contribution to celebrate Michael’s achievements, and preserve and strengthen their impact in the months and years ahead. Michael was ambitious in his dream of helping to create and foster the growth of an outstanding mathematics department. And our celebration of him deserves this equally ambitious goal.

To honor and celebrate Michael Moody, please give today and give generously. Thank you for your vision and your support.

Most Sincerely,
Andrew Bernoff

Diana and Kenneth Jonsson Chair of Mathematics, on behalf of the Department of Mathematics
