In-Kind Gifts

In-kind gifts, which include items such as art, equipment, and motor and water vehicles, are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The questions we address are: Is the gift related to the college's educational mission? Is it in our interest to accept it?

If you have something in mind, it never hurts to give us a chance to discuss it with you. Contact Heath Elliott via e-mail at Heath_Elliott@hmc.edu or phone at (909) 607-0902 to discuss your gift ideas.

For example, if you had a brand new mass spectrometer that we could use, we'd probably accept it. A 20-year-old model, maybe not. Old computers are rarely of use to us; old shop machinery might be. Given our heavy focus on the Humanities and Social Sciences, art is usually of interest. Cars on the other hand are typically not of interest to the college. Boats generally fall under the same category as cars, though we do have a small sailing club. If you have a sailboat you want to contribute, let us know.

Gifts of property valued at more than $5,000 must be supported by a formal appraisal in order to qualify for a tax deduction. HMC may not provide nor pay for the appraisal. Details of any sale of the property within two years must be reported to the IRS. All gifts of property should be unconditional (i.e. with no restrictions).
