This document describes the qualifications necessary to obtain/retain
an account on HMC's general-use systems. These systems include the
Windows 2000 servers, the general-use VMS systems and the general-use UNIX
system. It includes information for students, faculty, and staff at any
of the Claremont Colleges, and for those not affiliated with any of
the Colleges.
In all cases, you must agree to abide by the
Appropriate Use of Campus
Computing and Network Resources policy. Any abuse of the systems
may result in the revocation of any and/or all of your accounts.
Expired accounts are deleted, and any remaining files associated
with the expired account are backed up to tape and preserved for one year.
We encourage you to make copies of any important data before your
account expires since we can not guarantee the integrity of the tape
backups. We will provide mail forwarding for expired accounts for
a limited time, but the length and reliablity of this service can
not be guaranteed. Users should unsubscribe from mailing
lists and inform others of their new email address before their account
expires.
HMC Students
Any student enrolled full-time at HMC is entitled to an account on any
general-use CIS-managed system. All full-time students should have accounts
created for them on these systems at the start of their first year.
Student accounts expire in early July of the year of the student's
graduation.
HMC Alumni
All HMC graduates living in the local area are eligible for an alumni
account. For this purpose, the local area is defined to be the
local calling area as defined by GTE. These accounts must be extended on
a yearly basis and will be checked for expiration in early July.
HMC Faculty and Staff
Any full- or part-time faculty or staff member employed by HMC is eligible
for an account on the general-use CIS-managed systems. All employees should
contact the Computing and Information Services Department to request accounts on any of
the systems. Faculty and staff accounts expire if the person leaves the
college.
Other members of the Claremont Colleges Community
If you are not in one of the above categories, you may still be able
to obtain access to CIS's general-use systems. You must meet at least
one of the following qualifications:
You are working with an HMC faculty member on a non-commercial
project.
If you are eligible for this reason, please have the
faculty member send email or a written memo to CIS with your name and
a brief description of the project. These accounts must be extended
on a yearly basis and will be checked for expiration in early July.
You are currently taking a course at HMC that requires the use
of an CIS-managed system.
If you are eligible for this reason, please contact CIS with the
course that you are enrolled in and the institution that you are
affiliated with, i.e. Pomona College, Claremont High School, etc.
Your account will be valid for the duration of the course. These
accounts must be renewed on a semester-by-semester basis and will
be checked for expiration in early January and early July.
You need access to a resource available at HMC and not available
at your own institution.
You must get a note from the Director of Computing and Information Services at
your institution detailing the reasons why you need access to
HMC resources. These accounts must be renewed on either a
semester-by-semester basis or a yearly basis depending on the
circumstances. These accounts will be checked for
expiration in early July. If the account is a
semester-by-semester account, it will also be checked for
expiration in early January.
People not affiliated with the Claremont Colleges
Because our licensing agreements restrict the use of much of the software
installed on our machines, we cannot grant accounts to anyone not affiliated
in some way with the Claremont Colleges.
