It is possible to offer a variety of resources on your personal computer. You can share files via Microsoft Windows, you can set up a web server, you can set up an FTP server, or several other possibilities. These actions are not discouraged by CIS, but they are not supported. If you plan on offering a resource on your computer you should read the Policy Guide to Offering Dorm Resources. If you plan on sharing files using Windows, you should make sure that you use File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks and NOT File and printer sharing for NetWare Networks. NetWare filesharing will not work and could block all other users from accessing other campus NetWare servers. This could also result in other NetWare servers crashing. Intentional disruption of the dorm network is not an appropriate use and may be considered an Honor Code Violation. The bug that causes this problem was fixed by Microsoft, but NetWare file sharing should still not be used.
