The computer labs

Computing and Information Services currently maintains five computer labs for use by students, faculty and staff. Four of the labs are located in the basement of Parsons and include a PC lab, a Macintosh lab, a lab with a mix of Pentium and Macintosh computers, and the Faculty Resource Center. The fifth lab is located upstairs at the Linde Activities Center and has all Pentium computers. The labs are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access to the labs is restricted by a combination lock. The combination can be obtained from the CIS main office in Parsons B148. Please be prepared to show your ID. The PC and LAC labs are designed to be used both as computer labs and as electronic classrooms and may at times be reserved for use as a classroom (a schedule is posted outside the lab doors).

The file server, Charlie

All of the labs are set up so that you must have an account on CIS's file server, Charlie, before you can use any of the computers in the labs. All HMC students automatically receive a Charlie account as first year students. Non-HMC students taking classes at HMC are entitled to computer accounts on Charlie and the other CIS servers if access to HMC computer facilities are required for the course. Please see the HMC Account Policy for more information.

Logging in to Charlie

To login to Charlie on the PCs press Ctrl-Alt-Del, type your login name at the login prompt, and then type in your password in the password field. On the Macintoshes running OS 9 you are not prompted to login to Charlie until you either select Charlie in the Chooser, found in the apple menu, or until you try to launch a program or open your home directory. A dialog box will appear where you can type in your Charlie login name and password. On Macintoshes running OS X open the Go menu and click on Connect to Server.... Then in the list on the left hand side of the dialog that appears select HMC_MACS and in the middle list select CHARLIE. Click the Connect button, enter your user name and password when prompted and then click OK.

Your home directory

Each student receives disk space on Charlie (your home directory) to store files. On the PCs your home directory automatically maps to the H drive. On the Macintoshes your home directory can be found by selecting the volume for your class year from Server Volumes under the Apple menu (Note: Do not save any files to the profile folder in your home directory, as this may cause problems with your roaming profile). Clinic projects can receive shared disk space in the Clinic volume on Charlie by contacting help-desk@hmc.edu.

PC and Macintosh software

Most of the PC and Macintosh software is stored on the local hard drives, and other software is available on Charlie for download. Most of the PC applications will be accessible via the Start menu. Other programs can be added to the local hard drive. To do so go to the Start menu, go to Settings and click on Control Panel. Then click on Add/Remove Programs and click the Add New Programs button. Highlight the programs that you wish to add and click the Add button. The software should install on the PC's local hard drive. Macintosh information will be updated shortly. To find out what software is supported by Computing and Information Services please see the lists of Supported Software.

Access to many of the software packages on Charlie is controlled by a Key Server. Only computers connected to the HMC network and running the Key Access software can run these applications. This is so that we can control access to software with licensing restrictions.

Logging out of Charlie

To log out of Charlie on the PC, click on Start. Click on Shut Down. A menu will appear in the center of the screen. Select Log off [username] and click OK. On the Macintosh you can log out of Charlie by first closing all your applications and then dragging all Charlie directory icons from the desktop to the trash.
