Eudora in the PC Labs (Installation)

In the PC lab Eudora is configured to automatically look for a directory called MAIL in your Charlie home directory (the H drive). When Eudora is opened from Windows, it will automatically look here for your personal mail and data files. If this directory does not exist, then the directory will be created for you.

To install Eudora from Charlie, open Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel, and select Add New Programs. The Add New Programs screen should look like the screenshot below. Find Eudora and click Add.

If this is your first time running Eudora here in the PC lab, Eudora will automatically create the mail and data files it uses to keep track of your user and configuration information in \\charlie\hmc_youryear\your-username\mail.

A dialog box will then appear, prompting you for the account and user information which Eudora will use to download your mail from the server you specify. You will have the choice between following the setup instructions ("Create a brand new email account") and setting Eudora up by hand ("Skip directly to advanced account setup"). Select your preferred setup method, and hit "Next >".

Eudora Setup - Windows

The first thing Eudora asks for is your name.
Your name
This information shows up in the "from address" when people read email you send. After you have entered your name, hit "Next >" to continue setup.

Your email address
Next, Eudora will ask you your email address. This is the email address you want people to reply to, for example Firstname_Lastname@hmc.edu. Enter your email address, and hit "Next >".

Your login name
Eudora next asks you what your login name is. This is your username on the server where you get email; for students, the first letter of your first name followed by your last name. This may also be the first part of your email address (the part before the @ sign).

Incoming Server
Eudora next asks you the name of your incoming server. For students, this is usually odin.ac.hmc.edu; for faculty and staff, it is most likely thuban.ac.hmc.edu, and for administrative staff, it is most likely hmcadm.admin.hmc.edu.

Finally, Eudora asks you for an outgoing mail server. Enter the same name you entered before. The check box "Allow authentication" is checked by default; un-check this box.

Go on to read the Basic Operating Instructions or have a look at the advanced options.

Eudora Options - Windows

If you want to use advanced setup, or if you want to change your account information, you can do so using the options. On a Windows machine, these are available from the Tools menu (Tools/Options...). Tools menu

The options screen looks like this:
Options screen

The options on the first screen ("Getting Started") are:

  • Real name: When you send someone an email, they will see this name in the from: field.
  • Return address: The address you want people to reply to.
  • Mail Server (Incoming): The server from which you download your mail.
  • Login Name: Your login name on that server.
  • SMTP Server (Outgoing): Usually the same as your incoming mail server.
You may also want to edit your signature, which is some text that is added to the bottom of every email you send. To change your signature, find Signatures in the Tools menu. Select Standard from the menu that pops up. You will now have a text box open. In the box, type whatever you would like to have at the bottom of your outgoing mail. Close the window when you're done. Click on Yes to save your signature.

When you're done, click OK to save the information.

Checking Mail:

To check your mail click on the "Check Mail" icon or press Ctrl-M.

You will now be prompted for your password. Enter your password on the computer from which you recieve mail (if you are a student, this is your Odin password) and click OK.

If Eudora gives you an error, then you have probably made a minor mistake in the configuration dialog box. Hopefully, however, everything worked smoothly and your mail is now displayed message by message in your incoming mailbox window in Eudora. (If this is not the case, just give your local consultant a holler, and he/she will be glad to help you straighten things out.)

Sending Mail:

To send mail click on the "Send Mail" icon (just right of the "Check Mail" icon). This will create a new message.

send mail

Use the Tab key to go from field to field and enter the e-mail address of the recipient and a subject for the message and then type the text of your message. When you're done, press the Send button.

You can further customize Eudora's mechanical workings in the Tools->Options dialog box. You might also want to experiment with creating nicknames (shortcuts to the usernames to which you wish to send mail) to facilitate mailing, as well as new mailboxes (like the default inbox and outbox) in which to sort and store your received and sent mail.
