Eudora in the Mac Labs (Installation)

  1. Create a folder called Eudora or Mail on your home directory on Charlie. (This folder is referred to as your Mail folder in the rest of this document.)
  2. Open the Eudora folder in the folder Charlie.Mac:Communication Packages:TCP/IP Programs:Eudora Light 3.0.1. Copy the Eudora Settings file from this directory to your Mail folder.
  3. Open your Mail folder and double click on the Eudora settings file. This will launch Eudora. If it doesn't, make sure that you are logged into Charlie and you have mounted the Charlie.Mac volume.
  4. Follow the Setup instructions:

Eudora Setup for Mac

  1. From the Special Menu, choose Settings....
  2. Under Username, enter your user name on the server you get mail from. For students, if you read mail on Odin, this is the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name. For example, if your name is Ronald Reagan, your username is rreagan.
  3. Under Mail Server, enter the server you check mail on. For students, this is probably odin.ac.hmc.edu; for faculty and staff, thuban.ac.hmc.edu; for administration, hmcadm.admin.hmc.edu.
  4. Next, in the space for Real Name, enter your name, i.e. Ronald Reagan.
  5. The last item is optional and that is your return address. If you want everyone that replies to your mail to send mail to the account you entered for POP account, then leave this blank, if you would like your return address to be different, enter it here. For example, enter First_Last@hmc.edu because this is the HMC mail central address and this is where I would like my mail to go.
  6. Click OK.
  7. From the Special Menu, choose Signature. Enter whatever information you would like to appear at the end of all your messages.

Basic operating Instructions

Checking mail:

  1. From the File Menu, choose Check Mail.

Next, Eudora will ask you for your password. Your password is only asked for once a session, i.e. until you quit Eudora.

  2. Alternatively, in the Settings... dialog box (under the Special menu), you can have Eudora check your mail every couple of minutes. If you enter a value of 0, it will never check your mail until you choose the Check Mail command.
  3. All your new mail will appear in the IN box. Double click on each message to read it. If you want to reply to it, choose vReply from the Message menu.

Sending mail:

  1. From the Message Menu, choose New Message (not New Message to).

  2. Enter the address of the person you want to send mail.
  3. Next press tab, or click in the subject area. Enter any subject you wish.
  4. Press tab again or click in the body of the message.
  5. Enter your message and then click send.
