Introduction to Using Eudora

Eudora is a very customizable email program. Many options can be set to make Eudora work the way you want. Some of these options determine where your mail will be saved. You can have your mail saved on your personal machine or on one of the Windows 2000 file servers (Charlie or Alice). This document will help you decide how you should set up Eudora to make checking email best for you.

Using Eudora in your dorm room or office

To use Eudora in your dorm room or office, we recommend downloading Eudora Light from Eudora's Web Site. We don't recommend installing Eudora 4.3. Follow their installation instructions to install Eudora on your machine.

Following are instructions for configuring Eudora after installing from Eudora's web site. If you need instructions for an older copy of Eudora, go here.

The first time you run it, Eudora will display a setup dialogue.
create a brand new email account
"Create a brand new email account" is selected by default. If you hit "next >" with this option selected, Eudora will walk you through setup for windows, setup for mac OS X, or setup for mac os 9. If you prefer, you could use the advanced setup for Windows instead. Eudora for Mac has only one setup mode.

Eudora's defaults set it up to save all of your email and configuration on your local hard drive. If you are running Eudora on lab machines, your email and configuration files can be stored in your home directory on Charlie. If you don't plan on using Eudora elsewhere this will not be a problem for you. Read this if you plan on using Eudora from multiple locations.

Once you're set up, read Operating Instructions for PC, Operating Instructions for Mac OS X, or.

Problems with Eudora

If your password on the machine you want to use Eudora with has a space in it, Eudora will be unable to get your mail. This is a bug probably in the POP server software.

Using Eudora from Multiple Locations

You may choose to use Eudora from one location, like your office or dorm room, and then use another program, like Pine, to check your mail from any other location.

Another option is to use Eudora in multiple locations (e.g. in your dorm room and in the labs, or in your office and at home). If you plan on using Eudora from multiple locations, you should be careful about where you have your email stored. You probably want to have all of your email stored in one location. The easiest way to do this is to store your email on Charlie. You can follow the Mac or PC setup instructions to do this.

If you check your mail using both Eudora and Pine, you may want Eudora to leave your email on the server. It will mark messages on the server as read when it downloads them. Or, if you check your mail using Eudora in two locations, for example in the office and at home, but don't wish to keep messages on Charlie, you could set one of the computers (for example the one in the office) to leave messages on the server, and the other (for example the one at home) to delete them. That way you can keep an archive of all your old messages on one computer (in this example, the one at home).

To do this, go to the Eudora settings by selecting "Settings" from the "Special" menu on the Macintosh or by selecting "Options" from the "Tools" menu on the PC.

Under "Incoming mail", check the option "leave mail on server". If you want, you can also check "Delete mail from server when emptied from Trash". That way, you can delete messages you don't want to save using Eudora, and they will be deleted from the server as well.

If you use Charlie to save all of your email from both your own computer and from the lab, then you should uncheck "Leave Mail on Server". Your email will be available to you from both the lab and from your own computer because both have access to Charlie and all of your saved mail.
