About the Program
Q: What types of activities should I expect during the program?
A: We'll be offering a variety of activities, including workshops on selective college admission and financial aid, an admissions interview, class visits, research lab tours, academic presentations, and an opportunity to participate in HMC student activities. Most importantly, you will have time to interact with current HMC students, professors and other college-bound students who share your passion for math, science, and technology.
Q: Where will I stay during the program and where will I eat?
A: You will be hosted in a campus dorm by a current HMC student (Fall FAST only), and we'll provide all your meals while you're visiting. Don't worry, we won't let you starve!
Q: What do I need to bring and what should I wear?
A: You can dress comfortably for both programs. Fall FAST participants should bring toiletries, a blanket, pillow, towel, sleeping bag, and of course a change of clothes. Juniors, for Spring FAST all you have to bring is yourselves.
Q: How do I make travel arrangements and who will pay for it?
A: If you participate in the Spring FAST program, you will be expected to transport yourself to and from campus for the one-day program. If you are accepted for the Fall FAST program and live more than 250 miles from campus, you will be given contact information for a travel agency. You'll work with the travel agent to set up a flight from your local airport. HMC will cover the cost of your flight.
Q: Will I have fun?
A: No. Fun only happens on Mondays and Wednesdays between the hours of 4 and 6 pm.
About the Application Process
Q: Who is eligible to apply for the FAST program?
A: For the Fall FAST program you must be a high school senior; for the Spring FAST program you must be a high school junior. Both programs require you to be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Because HMC is a highly selective institution, your transcript and test scores will be important in the FAST application process, as will a love for math, science, and engineering.
Q: When is the application due?
A: The application must be received by 5 pm (PST) on the deadline printed on the application. You can mail your materials to: Office of Admission, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Blvd., Claremont CA 91711. You may also fax your materials to 909-607-7046.
Q: When will I be notified about my application to the Fly In?
A: You will receive notification via email approximately a week after the application deadline. Make sure you include a working email address in your application.
Q: How do I apply?
A: You’ll need to send us:
1. A FAST application
2. An unofficial copy of your high school transcript (9th grade–present)
3. A résumé
4. Answers for two short essay questions (found on the application)
Q: If I'm not selected for the Fly In, should I still apply for admission to the college?
A: Yes, we hope you'll still consider applying to HMC as a freshman. The FAST Fly-In is a small program, and we may not be able to accommodate every qualified student. The FAST Fly In selection process won't affect the freshman admission process in any way.
