About the Program
Q: What types of activities should I expect during FAST?
A: Each program offers tours, class visits, and a hands-on experiment/workshop led by one of our professors. From there it varies, as each program is tailored for students who are at different points of their College Process.
Fall FAST includes an overnight stay, an Admission Interview, a venture through the entire Claremont Consortium, and dinner in the Claremont Village (our downtown). Spring FAST includes sessions on applying to selective colleges, and paths a graduate can take after earning a Bachelors of Science Degree.
Q: Where will I stay during FAST and where will I eat?
A: Fall FAST Program participants are hosted in one of our residence halls by a current HMC Student (the Spring FAST Program is a one day program). The majority of your meals will be at our Dining Hall.
Q: What do I need to bring and what should I wear?
A: You can dress comfortably for both programs. Fall FAST participants should bring toiletries, a blanket, pillow, sleeping bag, and of course a change of clothes. Juniors, for Spring FAST, all you have to bring is yourselves.
Q: How do I make travel arrangements and who will pay for it (Fall FAST only)?
A: Students who live more than 250 miles from campus and want to fly to HMC will be given contact information for a travel agency. You'll work with the travel agent to set up a flight from your local airport. HMC will cover the cost of your flight and shuttle to and from the Airport.
Q: Will I have fun?
A: No. Fun only happens on Mondays and Wednesdays between the hours of 4 and 6 pm.
About the Application Process
Q: Who is eligible to apply for FAST?
A: Fall FAST applicants must be rising high school seniors; Spring FAST applicants must be high school juniors. Both programs require you to be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Because HMC is a highly selective institution, your transcript and test scores will be important in the FAST application process, as will a love for math, science, and engineering.
Q: When is the application due?
A: The application must be received by 5 pm (PST) on the deadline printed on the application. You can mail your materials to: Office of Admission, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Blvd., Claremont CA 91711. You may also fax your materials to 909-607-7046.
Q: When will I be notified about my FAST application?
A: You will receive notification via email approximately a week following the application deadline. Make sure you include your CURRENT EMAIL ADDRESS (the one you actually check) on your application, as all FAST correspondence is done via email.
Q: How do I apply?
A: You'll need to send us:
- A FAST application
- An unofficial copy of your high school transcript (9th grade–present)
- A resume
- Answers for two short essay questions (found on the application)
Q: If I'm not selected for the Fly In, should I still apply for admission to the college?
A: Definitely. If you are not selected as one of the FAST Program participants but are still interested in attending Harvey Mudd, we strongly encourage you to apply for admission. Space is limited to about 30-35 participants for the FAST Programs, which means we turn down a lot of very talented applicants each year. FAST application results have no effect on a student’s admission status with Harvey Mudd College.
