Who is considered an international student?
International students are students who aren’t citizens of the United States and don’t have a Permanent Resident Card issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In general, you’re considered an international student if you have a visa or intend to obtain a visa for study in the United States.

Important deadlines
While the application deadline is January 2, we recommend submitting your application earlier, so you'll have plenty of time to make adjustments if any aspects of your application are missing or need clarification. Learn more about important deadlines.

Applying for admission
To apply for admission you will follow either the freshman application process or the transfer application process as it pertains to your specific situation. In addition, you must provide:

  • A current email address.  Email is the main mode of communication between international applicants and HMC’s Office of Admission.
  • A profile of your secondary school.  This may include information about the structure of the course system (the required number of classes, the number of hours per course, the number of lab science courses, etc.), the grading scale, the rigor of the academic program, and the reputation of the school. We welcome any information that puts your record into its appropriate context.
  • English translations of any credentials not in English.
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required if English is not your first language, or if it has been your primary language for fewer than five years.
If you need financial aid
Because Harvey Mudd College funding for international students is limited (and international students are not eligible for federal funding), your level of financial need may affect your chances for admission. Please be advised:

  • We have funds that allow us to support only a handful of international students. There’s a lot of competition for funding.
  • If you’re an international first-year applicant and wish to apply for aid, you may not apply for Early Decision because we prefer to review all international candidates before allotting our limited funds.
  • If you enter HMC as an international student who does not need financial aid, you won’t be eligible to apply for aid in subsequent years.
  • Most of our funding for international students goes to incoming freshmen. International transfer students are very unlikely to receive funding from HMC.
  • If you are an international transfer student who needs financial aid, your chances for admission may be remote. It is very unlikely that we’ll admit international transfer students who apply for financial aid.
