HMC
Academics, Clinic and Research

You’re gonna hit the books, and you’re gonna hit ‘em hard. But you’re going to work hard with a purpose— and collaboratively. (So think of it more as a love tap.) That’s just what we do, and here’s how:

The Mudd Mix
Start with an intense, yet comprehensive, group of core classes that gives you the perfect balance of science, math, and engineering, no matter which of those wind up being your major. Add a healthy dose of humanities and social science so you know how your work fits into the world (and so you can have the occasional conversation with a civilian). Top it off with a bunch of extra-curriculars that build your leadership and teamwork skills. Instant Mudd.

Mudd in the Trenches
We don’t believe your education should be four years of looking at the pretty pictures in the textbooks. High-tech labs, the best and latest tools and cutting edge research aren’t some fantasy that undergraduates can only dream about- at HMC it’s a reality. We believe in getting our hands dirty with research, everything from testing local schools and parks for lead contamination to traveling around the world studying the intricacies of the rollercoaster. We’re out there thinking—and working—like real scientists and engineers. Because that’s what we are.

Mudd Matters
At HMC we’re all about the “hands-on.” In fact we require students to complete at least one year of in-depth research or a challenging Clinic project in order to graduate. But we’re not talking about solving hypothetical problems and washing test tubes here. In Clinic, we’re talking about working with companies like Boeing to develop a new hydrodynamic propulsion system and DIRECTV to figure out what impact residential construction has on how consumers point their satellite antennas. Our research ranges from immunotherapy and vaccine therapy of cancer to algorithmic and logic approaches to music creativity software.
