How Can I Help?

Science Bus Logo Color Reduced Size

There are many different (and easy) ways that you help with the Science Bus:

  • You can volunteer as a tutor and work with students. Tthis is a two-hour/week time commitment.
  • You can help create lesson plans. This would take about two hours per lesson writing meeting, but these meetings only happen every few weeks (during brunch on the weekend). The overall time commitment is much less if a lot of people help out.
  • You can help collect supplies.
  • You can serve on the Science Olympics committee.

To do any of these, it will help if you are on our mailing list.  If you're on this list, you can expect an email about once every 2-3 weeks.  Follow the instructions below to get on our list:

  1. Prepare an email to send to listkeeper [at] hmc [dot] edu (the email should have no subject)
  2. In the body of the email, type "subscribe sciencebus-l" exactly as shown here without the quotes (the listserver system is a computer that can only respond to emails with the propoer syntax)
  3. After sending the email, you should receive another email asking for an authentication email to be sent
  4. Follow the instructions and send that email
  5. If that fails, please contact Prof. Schaffer at bob_schaffer [at] hmc [dot] edu

Once you've added yourself to our mailing list, take a look at the "Current Schools and Tutors" and the "Classes We're Trying to Fill" sections of the website. If you are available during any of the times that we tutor and are interested in working with students, email Catherine Bradshaw at cbradshaw [at] hmc [dot] edu and let her know. She'll add you to her spreadsheet and get back to you with information about which tutor team she'll be adding you to.  Alternatively, if you're interested in serving on Science Bus in some other function (as a lesson writer for example), email Catherine and tell her what role you would like to play in the Science Bus program.  Catherine will then put you in touch with the relevant individuals who are in charge of the area that you are interesting in volunteering.
