Pitzer/HMC Study Abroad Option for Engineering Majors
The Engineering Abroad Program, offered by Pitzer College in conjunction with Harvey Mudd, builds on existing Pitzer study abroad programs in Botswana, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Italy, Nepal, and Turkey to provide new pathways to more destinations for HMC students. Available for study abroad in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010, the Engineering Abroad Program
- allows students to take a course based on Advanced Systems Engineering, E102, in either fall or spring semester abroad, taught in English by an English-speaking faculty member in engineering from a local university.
- follows a syllabus designed by HMC E102 instructors to facilitate smooth transition back into HMC after study abroad. (For study abroad in the fall, a student may take the E102 substitute abroad in the fall semester of junior year and then take E101 in the fall of senior year.)
- offers students the option of an Applied Engineering Elective specific to an engineering issue in the host country. Students may petition the Engineering Department to substitute this elective for an Engineering major requirement.
- provides the deep cultural and community engagement and transformative intercultural learning experiences that have won Pitzer study abroad programs national acclaim
- broadens viable study abroad destinations for HMC students to a larger number of developing countries.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 15, 2009 for Fall 2009 and September 25, 2009 for Spring 2010 (Preliminary application for Spring 2010 due March 15, 2009 to gauge interest.) Applications should be submitted to the HMC Office of Study Abroad, Platt Campus Center.
Programs:
With the exception of the Ecuador Andean Studies Program, all programs require no language prerequisite. Language is taught intensively on site. All programs are guided by full-time Resident Directors, hired and trained by Pitzer College.
