ARGENTINA

BUENOS AIRES:

Description: Sponsoring the largest and most prestigious research program in the social science in Latin America, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) provides students with a critical appreciation of Argentina and its place in Latin America. Participants should be interested in living in a large cosmopolitan South American city of 13 million inhabitants where 50% of the population lives under the poverty level. This is an ideal program for students interested in fulfilling humanities requirements in the social sciences by gaining in-depth knowledge of Argentine and Spanish-speaking South American politics, economics, history, literature and society.
Academics: Sponsoring the largest and most prestigious research program in the social science in Latin America, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) provides students with a critical appreciation of Argentina and its place in Latin America. In addition to being placed into a Spanish language class, students select classes from FLACSO seminars including The Political Economy of Argentina's Development, International Relations of Latin America, Seminar on Argentine Reality and Cultural Issues in Argentine History, as well as regular humanities-related courses at Universidad de Buenos Aires or Pontificia Católica Argentina.
Housing: Students live with local families or in a residencia with a native Spanish speaker.

Curriculum: Liberal Arts
Description: Argentina, a land of immigrants, mostly from European origins, boasts a vibrant culture which blends European and South American customs. Known as the "Paris of the Americas" students will enjoy the beautiful Argentinian museums, opera and ballets together with the sounds of tangos played in the city squares.
Academics: Students will earn a total of 15-16 U.S. credits. All students take the specially-designed "Advanced Spanish and Argentine Culture" courses in addition to regular university courses. Students may cross-enroll at any of four Argentine Univeristies (Universidad Católica Argentina, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Universidad del Salvador, and Universidad Torcuato di Tella) for their academic courses, and will select one of seven academic models of study (traditional, directed research, human rights, gender, diversity and minority studies, literature, theatre and cinema). Check the program ending dates for changes before confirming return travel plans. Ending dates vary from department to department, and you must complete all course obligations prior to departure. In addition, you should not make plans to travel on the final day of exams since there may be exams on that day.

CHILE

SANTIAGO:

Description: Santiago, a city of 6 million inhabitants, provides advanced students who enjoy urban life, an opportunity to study in one of the highest levels of education in Latin America. As the economic and cultural heart of Chile, students will experience its' friendly and welcoming culture, political stability, great festivals, and beautifully landscaped parks.
Academics: Students take courses that equal 15-16 U.S. semester credits. Students enroll in a required Advanced Spanish course specifically designed for IFSA-Butler students and one optional program course, History and Society in Contemporary Chile or an Independent Research project. Additional courses are taught at three prestigious Chilean universities: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Chile, and the Universidad Diego Portales. Science and/or engineering courses are available at all universities.

Description: Chile, a developed country of 15 million inhabitants, has one of the fastest growing, and politically stable economies in Latin America. In the capital city of Santiago, students can immerse themselves in a thriving urban city with a picturesque view the Andes to the east or travel west in less than two hours to view the Pacific Ocean.
Academics: Students take 5 courses totaling 15-16 U.S. credits. A Spanish Language course taught at the IES Santiago center is required and students will select an additional four courses. Students who have completed Spanish 44 must take one or two courses at either the Universidad de Chile or Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Science and/or engineering courses are available at both universities. Internships and service learning opportunities are also available.

VALAPARAISO:

Description: Valparaiso, is the second largest city in Chile and has views of both the mountains and the sea. Home to the Chilean Congress, students will experience elegant cobbled streets, Victorian houses, museums, galleries, and wonderful Chilean cuisine.
Academics: Students take courses that equal 15-16 U.S. semester credits. Students enroll in a required Advanced Spanish course specifically designed for IFSA-Butler students and one optional program course, History and Society in Contemporary Chile or an Independent Research project. Additional courses are taught at three prestigious Chilean universities: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso, Universidad de Valparaiso, and the Universidad Tecnica Frederico Santa Maria. Science and/or engineering courses are available at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso.
Housing: Students live with Chilean families in Vina del Mar, 10 minutes from Valparaiso.

COSTA RICA

HEREDIA:

Description: Heredia is a college town known for it's laid back and welcoming atmosphere. As one of Costa Rica's most historical cities, Heredia is located amidst vast coffee plantations and lush greenery. The main attraction of Heredia is its beautiful colonial architecture that can be seen all over town. It's also home to Universidad Nacional which has one of the foremost veterinarian schools in Central America, as well as an outstanding marine biology department.
Academics: Students take 5 courses totaling 15-16 U.S. credits. Students enroll in a required Advanced Spanish course specifically designed for IFSA-Butler students and one optional program course. Additional courses are taught at two local Costa Rican universities: Universidad de Costa Rica and the Universidad Nacional. MONTEVERDE:

Program Name: Monteverde, Costa Rica - Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Program Eligibility: 2.75 GPA, HMC good standing. Spanish 11 required, plus two semesters of biology and one semester of ecology or environmental science.

Description: Monteverde is a small, friendly bilingual community of 4,000 people located in Central America. Being surrounded by a cloud forest reserve provides a wide array of research opportunites. Students will explore and research Costa Rica's diverse ecosystems by participating in intensive tropical field-work and courses taught from both a theoretical and taxonomic perspectives to biology-related majors.
Academics: Participants take "Humans in the Tropics","Tropical Biology", "Tropical Diversity", "Tropical Ecology", Spanish language and complete an Independent Study. Students should expect an academically intense experience and be willing to learn in a variety of settings, including classrooms, beaches, waterfalls, and treetops.

Description: Students have a unique opportunity to study tropical biology in the field, to understand key environmental policy issues, and to improve their understanding of Spanish language and Costa Rican culture by spending most of the semester at the OTS' three biological stations located in contrasting regions of Costa Rica.
Academics: Students enroll in Fundamental of Tropical Biology (BIO 134), Field Research in Tropical Biology (BIO 1351), Environmental Science and Policy of the Tropics (ENV 129), and Culture and Language in Costa Rica (SP 62).
