FRANCE

NANTES:

Description: Nantes, a major seaport near the Loire River, is the capital of the Pays de la Loire région of northwestern France. While only two hours from Paris by train, it is considered one of the most desirable places to live in France, especially for young professionals who enjoy the arts, a lively night life, aor prefer not to live in Paris. Nantes offers students ample opportunity to practice their French as English is rarely heard on the streets.
Academics: Students enroll in 15-19 credits per semester by enrolling in IES area studies courses and at least one university course. Engineering majors with strong French language skills can enroll in courses at one of Universite' de Nantes two engineering schools under the name of Ecole Polytechnique de l'Universite' de Nantes. This area is known as the "Silicon Valley" of Nantes and is perfect for engineering students. Students studying Mathematics, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics may take courses at Universite' de Nantes. IES French language courses, area studies courses in Art History, Economics, History, Literature, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Theater are also available.

PARIS:

Description: Also known as the "City of Lights", Paris is the capital of France. Known for its' iconic landmarks and cuisine, Paris has become one of the world's leading business and cultural centers. It is also home to many major medieval philosophers, writers and early scientists. Hamilton's program in Paris is designed as an immersive French experience. Students have a wide selection of courses from multiple French institutions. By living with a French family, students become proficient in French and become insiders, rather than simply observers of French culture. The program begins with an orientation in Biarritz, on the French Atlantic coast, and excursions throughout Paris and the rest of France continue throughout the year. .
Academics: Students take the equivalent of four courses (note: some courses may be 1/2 credit), choosing between offerings in biology, chemistry, geology or math at Université de Paris VI (Institut de Pierre et Marie Curie), and humanities-related courses from the Sciences Po, the Université de Paris III, the Institut Catholique and other institutions, as well as Hamilton's own courses offered at Reid Hall. Regular attendance at all classes is expected of all students and counts in the final grade. Student's pledge to speak French during the program while they are immersed in both the language and the culture.
Most students study for a full-year; however, Hamilton will accept spring only applications from students in specific programs like the sciences. These are coveted spots for select students.

Description: La "Ville Lumière", Paris is home to countless museums, cafés, and medieval streets that wind around contemporary architecture. A city à decouvrir, Paris is an invitation to experience all the world's cultures while maintaining a proud and distinctly French feeling. Le Centre Madeleine, the headquarters of the Middlebury School in France, is located in the 8th arrondissement, close to the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysées.  Students enroll in courses across several disciplines at both the Centre Madeleine and in one of several partner institutions.
Academics: Students enroll in 4-5 courses equaling 15-16 Middlebury credits per semester. Students can enroll in humanities courses at Paris - Panthéon Sorbonne (Paris 1), Paris - Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris 3), or Paris - Diderot (Paris 7).  Students interested in the sciences (biology, chemistry, math, physics) will take these courses at Paris - Diderot (Paris 7).  Students are expected to maintain a language pledge while they are immersed in both the language and the culture.

POITIERS:

Description: As the capital of Vienne dept.on the Clain River, Poitier is architecturally one of the most interesting cities in Europe. The center is picturesque and its' streets portray the remains of historical architecture, especially from the Romanesque period. Additionally, many great historical events happened in the city from the Late medieval era. Middlebury's prestigious location on Paris' Right Bank: le Centre Madeleine.
Academics: Students enroll in 4-5 courses equaling 15-16 Middlebury credits per semester. Students can enroll in virtually all disciplines in Poitiers, including science, math and engineering at Université de Poitiers.  Students interested in humanities-related courses will enroll in two courses at Centre Madeleine and two courses at a local institution. Students wishing to take any courses at the Institut d'Études Politiques must be pre-selected by Middlebury and accepted by the Institut, on the basis of their language skills and academic background. There is a separate, but simple, application needed to study at the Institut d'Études Politiques. In addition, students may study politics, sociology and international studies, linguistics, literature, cinema/theater, history, or art history at the Université de Paris IV (Sorbonne), and the Institut Catholique de Paris, a private university with language, literature, history, art history, and sociology courses taught at the Centre Madeleine. Students are expected to maintain a language pledge while they are immersed in both the language and the culture.

STRASBOURG:

Curriculum: Liberal Arts, Engineering (summer program only), Sciences
Description: Originally a Celtic village until it was captured in the 5th century by the Franks, Strasbourg lies west of the Rhine River on the Franco-German frontier and is home to the Council of Europe, European Court of Human Rights, as well as the Parliament of the European Union.  It is also the capital of the Alsace region of France. A five minute bike ride to Germany and a one-hour train ride to Switzerland allow students to benefit from the influence of three cultures.
Academics: All students take a 2-credit, pre-semester field study seminar on European Identity. Students will have the opportunity to visit major cities and historical sites, exploring the impact of culture, history and politics on the European peoples. The seminar alternates between a focus on Berlin and Eastern Europe in the fall and a focus on Paris and Western Europe in the spring. Following the seminar, three options are available: In Option I, students enroll in an intensive French language course and take additional area studies courses in English or French at the SU Center. Option II is designed for students with at least one year of college-level French who want to focus on the study of French language and culture. This is an intensive language program and all instruction, papers and exams are in French. In Option III, advanced students of French enroll in courses entirely taught in French and may enroll in engineering and science courses at the Insitut National des Ciences Aplliquees(INSA), area studies courses at the Université Marc Bloch, the Université Robert Schuman, and the Insitut d'Etudes Politiques.

GERMANY

BERLIN:

Description: Berlin is a center for business, politics, and culture, and an ideological crossroad where East meets West. The renowned Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin, one of the academic institutions where students can continue their study of German, is a five-minute walk from the IES Center.
Academics: Students take four German-taught courses totaling 15-19 semester hours by local faculty. Mathematics, natural sciences, computer science and selected humanities are offered at the Humboldt-Universitat zu and Freie Universitat, and engineering students can enjoy a variety of courses at the Technische Universitat(TU). A German language course is required. During the spring semester students must enroll in at least one university course. Interested students can audit regular courses at Humboldt during the fall. Field study in Central and Eastern Europe is an additional feature of IES Berlin. Internships are available.

FREIBURG:

Description: Freiburg is a cosmopolitan, yet cozy city, located on the edge of the scenic Black Forest and in close proximity to the neighboring countries of France, Luxemborg, and Switzerland. Students can enjoy the picturesque medieval architecture while strolling next to the serene Bächle (streams) that flow along the narrow streets. This program is ideal for the individual who prefer a setting where everything is within easy walking or biking distance.
Academics: Students take 5-6 courses totaling 15-19 units per semester. A German language course is required along with four additional courses taught in German. Students can take science courses in applied science, biology, computer science, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics and physics at the renowned Albert-Ludwigs Universität Freiburg, located just minutes from the IES Center. Students can apply for full-year or spring semester only.
Housing: Students live in apartments with German students
Comments: Registration occurs upon arrival in Freiburg. Due to the differences in the German and U.S. academic calendar, fall semester students may not be able to participate in university courses. If you are a fall semester student who must leave after the completion of IES Abroad courses, you may not enroll in University courses. If you are a fall semester student who can remain in Freiburg through January, but must return to the U.S. before the end of the German university semester, you will be carefully advised by IES Abroad in the selection of university courses to ensure that the courses you select and the professors that teach them can accommodate an early departure.

 

GREECE

ATHENS:

Description: The Arcadia Center for Hellenic, Balkan, and Mediterranean Studies and Research provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the language, history and culture of Greece. Students are free to explore the marvels of Athens, including the National Archaeological Museum, Omonoia Square, and the Ancient Greek architecture of the Parthenon on the Acropolis.
Academics: Students take a 2-credit cornerstone course, "The Greek Key," which provides focused learning on the Greek culture via classroom and community participation. This program, one of the most highly-regarded mathematics programs in the world, focuses specifically on theoretical mathematics, featuring courses in complex analysis, combinatorics, and number theory, among many other subjects. Hungary has a long tradition of excellence in mathematics education, and this program enables undergraduate mathematics and computer science students to spend a semester studying mathematics under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers.

ITALY

PARMA:

Description: Famous for its ham, its cheese, its architecture and its' countryside, the Emilia-Romagna region has played a vital role in the nation's economic, cultural and political life. It's also home to the University of Parma, one of the oldest universities in the world! Students will have an opportunity to experience the Romanesque architecture of Pama's Cathedral, the Baptistery, dating from the 12th century, and many other local icons.
Academics: Integrates classroom instruction with active learning experiences in a variety of settings. This four part Humanities program format consists of lectures, seminars, fieldwork, and independent study. Engineering majors can participate in this program using the "engineering option" by taking an E102 course that will satisfy the requirements for the regular HMC E102 course. They will also have the option of choosing an applied engineering independent study project.

SPAIN

Native speakers are strongly advised to enroll in advanced Spanish courses in order to qualify. Please note that securing a student visa can take six to eight weeks. Most programs strongly encourage that students take a Spanish class in the semester preceding their arrival in Spain. This also holds true for students participating in the Englishspeaking programs as English isn't widely spoken in Spain.

BARCELONA:

Description: Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous province of Catalonia and has been a major cultural center since the Middle Ages. This city is also a major economic center and has one of Europe's principal Mediterranean ports. Though Catalan and Spanish are spoken in Barcelona, residents accept Catalan at their "official" language.
Academics: Students enroll in 4-5 courses totaling 15-19 credits. Students take a language placement test and are placed in language tracks prior to the program.  A Spanish language course is also required. Students can take English or Spanish-taught courses at the IES center or through one of their partner universities. Intermediate/Advanced Spanish language students are eligible to take courses in Spanish alongside local students at the IES' partner universities. All science and technical courses are located at the partner universities, and students must meet the Spanish language requirement to take these courses.

MADRID:

Description: With a population of about 4.6 million, Madrid is an ideal place to connect university students to the city's business, culture, and politics. As the art capital of Spain, Madrid's local scene cultivates up-and-coming filmmakers, dramatists, and writers in this capital city.  Though it has a modern feel, students will enjoy visiting landmarks such as the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House, the Buen Retiro park, and the Prado museum.
Academics: Students can enroll in three small, seminar-style classes and one course at either the Universidad San Pablo de Madrid or the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (science courses). Students must pledge to speak only Spanish during the program, both in and outside of class. Students also participate in a series of guided fieldtrips to different parts of Spain. This program is ideal for students who prefer small liberal arts-oriented classes and want a serious academic enviornment revolving around the program's Spanish-speaking pledge.

Description: The SLU campus is located on the northwest side of Madrid, with open views of the mountains to the north and west, and superb metro and bus access. Academics: Students enroll in four courses at the university, including engineering and the sciences (as of spring 2011, engineering students can now enroll in a course that fulfills the requirements of E102).  As an English-speaking university which represents students from more than 65 countries, this program is ideal for students who prefer a smaller campus and classe size. SLU Madrid provides a comfortable environment for non-Spanish speakers.

GRANADA:

Description: Granada, located in the colorful and culturally-rich Spanish region of Andalucía, is one of the most charming cities in all of Spain. It is situated at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is less than an hours drive to the Mediterranean Sea. Its' fascinating history includes over seven centuries of Moorish rule, which is seen through such architectural treasures as the Alhambra Palace, the white-washed neighborhood of the Albayzín and the Generalife gardens. Granada is a true university town where 60,000 of the 240,000 residents are students.
Academics: Students take 4-5 courses totaling 15-16 credits. Intermediate Spanish language level students can enroll in English or Spanish-taught courses at the IES center. Advanced Spanish level students have the additional option of taking Spanish-taught courses with local Spanish students at the University of Granada, Spain's third largest university. Special courses in Islamic and Andalusian studies are also available at the IES Center.

SALAMANCA:

Description: Located close to the Portugal border, Salamanca is a classic medieval city with narrow cobble-stoned streets. Nicknamed "the Oxford of the Spanish world", it is home to one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities, Universidad de Salamanca. The IES Salamanca program is designed for students who wish to immerse themselves in a Spanish university town.
Academics: Students take five to six courses a semester totaling 15-19 U.S. credits. IES offers courses in Spanish, art history, economics, education, history, literature, political science, religion, and sociology as well as a curricular focus on comparative studies of the Mediterranean Basin and comparative studies of Spain and Latin America. Science students can enroll in Biology, chemistry, or environmental science courses at Universidad de Salamanca (USAL). Students are required to take one Spanish language course and a minimum of one university course each semester. Internships are available.

Description: The rich and fascinating history of Muslim civilization has left a lasting impact on the culture and architecture of Seville. Students will live in the quiet charm of this richly historic city of narrow streets lined with orange trees and numerous quiet courtyards. Among the many sites to enjoy are the largest Medieval Gothic cathedral in the world, the Alcázar, a royal palace dating back to the 14^th century, and the Archivo de Indias, the most important collection of documents related to the trade between Spain and the Americas.
Academics: Academics are divided into three sections: Sweet Briar seminars, regular University courses, and special Cursos Concertados taught in Spanish by University of Seville faculty. Topics include language, literature, history, art history, economics, geography, and Latin American studies.

UNITED KINGDOM

These approved programs offer students a wide range of location choices, size of city, curricular offerings, and academic calendar. When studying at British universities, students take courses alongside Brisitish students at local universities. Academically, these institutions follow a similar plan of a more independent study approach. At all the UK institutions courses are taught in English, and students have access to the wide variety of subjects offered by the universities.

The UK remains one of the most popular destinations for studying abroad and students enjoy its' close proximity to other European countries.
Academics: Students usually register for 4 classes totaling 15-19 U.S. credits. Courses at some universities are weighted differently where a full course load may only equal three courses. Students take classes at the local university alongside local students.
Housing: Students stay on-campus or in student apartments. In some locations, the commute to campus may be as much as 40-50 minutes by public transportation.

CAMBRIDGE:

Academics: Students do not attend classes but instead, take part in Cambridge's Tripos system, which is made up of three elements: supervisions, lectures and exams. Not all colleges at Cambridge teach science and engineering.

Academics: Students do not attend classes but instead attend tutorials - an hour each week with a tutor in a primary subject and an hour every other week with a secondary tutor. Not all colleges at Oxford teach science and engineering.
Housing: Students stay on-campus or in student apartments.
Comments: Each Oxford University college has a different GPA requirement. Oxford University requires two academic recommendations and two graded writing samples fo reach subject. Please pay attention to application deadlines as they may vary between the various colleges.
