CHINA

BEIJING:
Program Sponsor: IES
Program Name: Beijing Contemporary Issues in China
Program Eligibility: 3 .0 GPA, HMC good standing. Chinese 1b or 2 required. Students without this pre-requisite can attend the IES Beijing summer program to hone their language skills.
Language of Instruction: Chinese (Mandarin) and English
Curriculum: Liberal Arts
Description: Beijing is a modern Asian boom-town striving to preserve the cultural landscape of its' glorious past. Through the new high-rises and financial institutions lays the remnants of Old Beijing, beautiful parks sprayed with pagodas, 19th century homes, and plenty of dumpling and noodle stands lining the streets. The program is located on the campus of the prestigious Beijing Foreign Studies University (Bei Wai), where students will hone their language skills and learn about modern China.
Academics: This program allows students to take an in-depth look at the enourmous changes happening in China today and to explore its' history, economics, and culture. Students typically take one 10-credit Mandarin Chinese language course and two area studies courses. Internships are available.
Housing:
Students live in residence halls with a Chinese roommate or with a Chinese family.

HONG KONG:

Program Name: International Asian Studies Program (IASP) - Direct Enroll

Program Eligibility: 3.0 GPA, HMC good standing
Curriculum: Liberal Arts, Engineering, Sciences
Description: Hong Kong, a city of almost 7 million people, is a modern, cosmopolitan city mixed with the historical touches of traditional farming and fishing villages. Under the unique principle of "One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong enjoys an autonomous position within China and aside from foreign affairs and defense, maintains its capitalistic system, legal and political systems, free trade and freedom of speech. The IASP offers a unique opportunity to live and study in one of the top financial centers in the world without previous knowledge of Chinese. In Hong Kong, where English continues to be the language of business, students take English-taught courses with local students in, for example, economics, engineering and science, social science or other disciplines, or with international students in Chinese civilization and culture.
Academics: Students directly enroll into CUHK and select three English-taught courses from CUHK's faculties, in addition to one Chinese language course (Cantonese or Putunghua/Mandarin). Students are grouped under a major called IASP (International Asian Studies Programme) where they can take courses from the Faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Science and Social Science.
Housing: Participants live with local students in CUHK residence halls. Students cannot be accepted unless housing is available.

 

INDIA

HYDERABAD:

Description: Hyderabad is the fifth largest cosmopolitan city in India and is at the heart of India's rapidly developing global economy. This program is designed for students with a desire to understand the complexities and paradoxes of the world's largest democracy. Students have the opportunity to explore India's cultural and religious diversity while experiencing the impact of modernity upon tradition. This program is also ideal for a student who would like to do research in the form of a service project, volunteer work or an internship.
Academics: Students take a required Hindi Language course, in addition to three courses, at either the Study in India Program (SIP) or at the University of Hyderabad, the first federally funded university in the southern part of India.
Housing: Students live in shared rooms in a guest house for foreign students on the university campus.

 

JAPAN

NAGOYA:

Description: The thriving, modern city of Nagoya is the gateway to the vast beauty and culture of central Japan. Nagoya's population exceeds 2 million and is an important industrial and cultural center. Students will enjoy scenic areas such as Ise Bay, Nobi Plain, and the Kiso River, as well as a variety of historic attractions.
Academics: Full curriculum totaling 15-18 U.S. credits per semester. Students have the option to either immerse themselves in Japanese culture full-time by taking classes at Nanzan University, a distinguished private university, or they can enroll in English-taught area studies courses at the University's Center for Japanese Studies.
Housing: Students live with local families or in residence halls with Japanese students.

TOKYO:

Curriculum: Liberal Arts
Description: Contemporary Japan is a land of intrigue, a country that has mastered the ability to balance both ancient traditions and ultra-modern convenience. Where else is it possible to participate in a traditional tea ceremony against a backdrop of suburban sprawl, which contains some of the largest corporations in the world? This program is based at Sophia University, a prestigious, private Jesuit institution located near the heart of Tokyo.  Sophia University is a very international campus and though Japanese is spoken in the classrooms, English is commonly spoken around campus.  Sophia is also known for its' high academic standards.
Academics: Students interested in an intensive language program will take a Japanese language course (either a regular course or a Japanese Intensive course) and two or three other English-taught area studies courses. This program offers one of the largest selections of elective courses, in English, available in Japan.
Housing: Students live with a Japanese host family or in a student dormitory
Comments: This is a spring only program from late March to late July University.

Program Name: Tokyo Society and Culture

Curriculum: Liberal Arts
Description: Combining the best of a fast-paced, modern city with the quietness of its historical temples and shrines, Tokyo is truly a city of wonderful contrasts. Just a 30 minute commuter train ride from the heart of Tokyo, this program is ideal for students who want to learn the best of modern, fast-paced Tokyo with the convenience and charm of the coast.
Academics: Students enroll in six credits of Japanese language and an additional 9 to 12 credits in liberal arts courses. Students take language courses at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS), a private university dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in International Studies, Foreign Languages, Intercultural Communication, Japanese Culture, and Linguistics. Additional area studies courses can be taken at the IES Tokyo Center or KUIS.
Housing: Students live in residence halls or with local families

Program Name: International Christian University

Program Eligibility: 3.0 GPA, HMC good standing. One year of college-level Japanese.
Curriculum: Liberal Arts
Description: As the capital and economic hub of Japan, Tokyo is a shining example of how old traditions and new high-tech culture meld to create one of the most fascinating cities in the world. This provides a landscape in which, in a single day, one can see a kimono-clad woman talking on a cell phone or an old man selling baked yams from his homemade cart. Students attend ICU, a distinguished liberal arts institution with a superb Japanese language program. Due to ICU's large number of foreign students and faculty, Japanese and English are used regularly in the classroom and daily campus life.
Academics: Japanese language, Japanese history, area studies and culture are offered. At ICU, students attend the summer session followed by the fall term (Early July to late November only)
Housing: Students live in host institution dormitories, private homes, and student apartments. Students prepare their own meals.
Comments: Limited spots are available and priority goes to Pomona students.  

KOREA

SEOUL:

Description:  Korea's population is one of the most ethnically and linguistically homogenous in the world. In fact, virtually all Koreans share a common cultural and linguistic heritage, identifying themselves as ethnically Korean and speaking the Korean language. Yonsei University is located less than 20 minutes from downtown Seoul in an area where several other colleges and universities are also located.
Academics: Students enroll directly in English-taught courses at the host-university with Korean students. A variety of science, engineering and humanities-related courses are available.
Housing: International House dormitory with other CIEE and International students.

 

SINGAPORE

KENT RIDGE:

Description: As a multi-lingual city where English is the language of business, government, and education, Singapore offers students a chance to live and study in a society rich in Chinese, Indian and Malay influences. Despite its small size, the island-city of almost 5 million people is one of the world's most prosperous countries and boasts the world's busiest port. Students attend classes at NUS, a leading global university in Asia. The NUS community has a rich social and cultural diversity, admitting students from over 100 countries.
Academics: Students take a minimum of 3 compulsory modules and 2 reserve modules at NUS in the faculties of arts, humanities, or sciences.
Housing: Students generally live in off-campus apartments
Comments: Students interested in this program should have a very independent nature. Registration may require visiting several different departments throughout the campus as opposed to registering in one location.
