Description:  One of Africa's most politically and economically stable countries, Botswana is home to 1.5 million people, the Kalahari Desert, and world famous wildlife parks. Many of Botswana's citizens live in the major cities, towns, and villages along the eastern border and enjoy standards of education and economic well-being rivaled on the continent only by neighboring South Africa.
Academics: Integrates classroom instruction with active learning experiences in a variety of settings. This four part Humanities program format consists of lectures, seminars, fieldwork, and independent study. Engineering majors can participate in this program using the "engineering option" in which students will take an E102 course that will satisfy the requirements for the regular HMC E102 course. They will also have the option of choosing an applied engineering independent study project.
Housing: Students stay with local families.

CAIRO

Description:  AUC was founded in 1919 by Americans devoted to education and community service in the Middle East.  As the region's premier English-language university, AUC offers a bridge between the East and West by introduces students to the ancient heritage and contemporary culture of Egypt and the Middle East while enabling students to experience life in a non-Western culture.
Academics: Students enroll in an Arabic language course as well as other university courses with their Egyptian peers. AUC's computer studies and engineering programs are the only programs outside the United States that are accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Board and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Housing: Students live in the AUC residence Hall.

SOUTH AFRICA

Description: Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with superb mountain walks, vineyards, and beaches.  A vibrant multicultural city offering a rich array of day and night activities, it has a reputation for being the most open-minded and relaxed city in South Africa. This program is ideal for students from all academic disciplines who have a strong interest in learning about contemporary South African life and society and the forces that have created that society.
Academics: Students take a total of 14-19 U.S. semester credits while studying at the University of Cape Town, an internationally recognized research university. Depending on the program provider, students may be required to enroll in a required African studies course and/or participate in community service projects.
Housing: Students stay in residence halls, group houses, apartments, or with local families.

Program Name: Organization for Tropical Studies(OTS): African Ecology and Conservation

Description: South Africa's rich biological and cultural diversity makes it an exceptional location in which to examine issues related to ecology and conservation. Based in Kruger National Park, field study and research exercises will expose students to different types of savanna as you view the park's abundant wildlife.
Academics: Students will take four core courses: South African Ecosystems and Diversity, Field Research in Savanna Ecology, Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in South Africa, and History and Culture of South Africa. Science courses will be taught by Duke and OTS faculty and distinguished visiting scientists. Prominent South African historians, artists, and cultural theorists will lead the course on History and Culture of South Africa.
Housing: Students will travel throughout South Africa staying in shared rooms consisting of two to four people. Students will also spend three days with a local family in a South African village community.
Comments: The program is physically and intellectually demanding, stressing full immersion and hands-on scientific and cultural studies.
