HMC Center for Environmental Studies

New Emphasis in Environmental Analysis available starting with the Class of 2014

The Center for Environmental Studies at Harvey Mudd College was created in May 1999 to create and coordinate interdepartmental programs related to environmental studies. The Center provides a framework through which students, faculty, and alumni can come together to identify critical issues in the relationship between human life and both natural and human-built environments, to investigate those issues, and to help articulate the important roles that science, mathematics, and engineering will take in addressing those issues. Through this framework, the Center seeks to perpetuate creative and responsible professional practices in an increasingly fragile world.

Joshua TreeWith its exceptional rigor in science, engineering, and mathematics, its strong emphasis on humanities and social science, and its mission of socially responsible scientific and technological leadership, Harvey Mudd College is uniquely poised to forge a new synthesis of hard science and human values to tackle environmental problems. This Center represents an appropriate, timely, and fundamentally important realization of the mission of the college, and we anticipate that the Center will achieve a leading role in guiding the college well into the 21st Century.
