HMC
CEP Readings

The bibliography to follow is arranged alphabetically by author. In the future I hope to organize the bibliography more systematically into research topics and geographic areas. The list will be updated periodically and the reader is encouraged to send additional references (including your own work!) and any corrections to paul_steinberg@hmc.edu.

I recommend verifying the accuracy of the references listed here (particularly page numbers and such) through library database searches before including them in published bibliographies. Many of these references were copied directly from diverse databases, bibliographies, websites and course syllabi, and may include typographic errors from the originals.

The major criteria for inclusion in the bibliography are that the work: (1) has an analytic orientation, preferably appearing in a peer-reviewed scholarly venue; (2) focuses on domestic political processes - regardless of whether the environmental topic is global climate change or local watershed management. I have included every political science publication I could find that meets these criteria.

To date, most comparative research on society and the environment, particularly in non-Western societies, has issued from the fields of sociology and anthropology (particularly the sub-fields of environmental sociology and political ecology) and environmental history. Some of this work speaks directly to the concerns of political scientists. This is true of sociological analyses of environmental movements, political ecology research on environmental justice, and environmental histories of conservation as colonial statecraft. CEP researchers are strongly encouraged to visit the web links provided for these other fields and to use these terms as keywords in internet and database searches. Given my particular interest in identifying and fostering contributions from political science, however, I have included in the bibliography only a few samples of works that do not attempt to draw on, or contribute to, the political science literature.

Finally, the journal Environmental Politics carries an exceptionally large number of CEP articles, with particularly good coverage of Europe. Rather than list all of these articles, I have selected a geographically diverse sample from the journal.
