When I first came to Mudd, one of the least likely tracks I could envision myself following was that of chemistry.  It was one of my weaker points in high school, and just generally not something I could see myself pursuing.  And yet here I am, a senior chemistry major in my final year of undergraduate studies.  I don't really know what prompted the change in direction -- I imagine the fact that the faculty and staff are amazing only helped, as did the intimacy associated with small classes/labs.  There's a warmth in the chemistry department (and, to a large extent, at Mudd in general) that just isn't present elsewhere.

The William G. Sly Prize

Throughout his thirty-four years of understanding and love of learning that were an inspiration to colleagues and students alike. This prize honors a junior chemistry who exemplifies the curiosity, intellectual integrity, and enthusiasm that Bill brought to his teaching and research.

The privilege of studying at Harvey Mudd College is being able to spend time with some of the brightest and the most creative faculty and students from around the world. The small class sizes, close student-professor relationships and great learning ambiance are what have made it a pleasure as well as a privilege. Studying Chemistry at Mudd has been as much about in-depth coursework as about gaining extensive practical experience, and consequently I feel prepared for any of the numerous career opportunities beyond Mudd. But the true comparative advantage of Mudd is that I have been able to pursue interests outside the scope of my major: with classes in French Literature, Anthropology and Economics as well as activities such as choir, debate, quizbowl and board game playing, the Mudd experience is truly amazing

After my junior year of high school, I pretty much knew that I was going to be a chemistry major. Consequently, much of my college search focused on finding a school with a strong undergraduate research presence in chemistry--and Harvey Mudd was that school! Small class sizes, interesting and challenging classes, and close faculty-student relationships are, to me, what makes Mudd really stand out. I’ve been able to do research here since the spring of my sophomore year, which has been an absolutely amazing experience. And since coming here, I’ve also shot the odd Nerf gun, greatly expanded my horizons on the subject of tea, and eaten the best strawberry-filled donuts in the world.
