Summer ResearchMix '07

HMC's chemistry faculty believe that research of project work on a significant chemical problem is a particularly valuable educational experience. Senior research (Chem 151-152) is the capstone experience of the chemistry degree. Students participate in research with faculty, some starting in their first year; all chemistry majors pursue research and write a senior thesis. About 15 to 25 students work on research projects in the department during the summer.

More than 50 papers co-authored by HMC students and faculty have been published during the last five years. The American Chemical Society Award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution was presented to Professor Philip Myhre in 1991 and to Professor Mits Kubota in 1992. Professors Robert Cave, Kerry Karukstis and William Daub received Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards in 1993, 1994 and 1982, respectively. Professor Van Hecke received a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Scholar-Fellow Award in 1994.

Financial support for research comes from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Research Corporation, Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society, Dreyfus Foundation,  Jonsson Foundation and the Eugene Mindlin Chemistry Fund.
