The focus of my lab's research is the mechanism of DNA processing enzymes in chromatin environments.  We use biochemical techniques to study the mechanism employed by DNA glycosylases, a class of DNA repair enzymes that recognize and excise damaged bases from the genome.  In addition to subjects strictly within chemistry and biology, I have a strong interest in the burden of infectious disease, especially HIV-AIDS, on the developing world.  Students from my course on HIV-AIDS participate in service learning projects in southern California and in Jinja, Uganda.
