Rachel Harris — A Library of Mesomorphic Materials for the Systematic Study of Structure and Physical Properties; the Smectogenic 2,7 Diacyl Fluorenes - Research Advisor: Dr. Gerald Van Hecke. I worked really hard on all of my schoolwork while at Mudd and this took up a lot of my time, but this is because I took more tech electives than necessary. I enjoyed my chemistry electives though because the courses were interesting and they made me want to be an organic chemistry even more. Outside of work, I enjoyed just hanging out with my friends in the dorm lounges watching TV and joking around. When I felt really motivated I would get outside and either go hiking or play some volleyball. I hope to do a lot of the same things in the future, while I am attending UIUC to get my Ph.D. This summer I will be working with Marty Burke at UIUC and will probably do my Ph.D. working with him. Once finished with graduate school, I hope to do R&D at a pharmaceutical company.

Harvey Mudd helped me develop into the type of person I wanted to be before I got here. I now feel capable, not just in an academic setting, but in organizing events, working with new people, and managing my time effectively. The personality of the chemistry department as well as the close attention that the professors can provide has really made my time here enjoyable. I don't think I could have gotten into a Ph.D. program at Stanford if I had gone to a large state school or a less undergraduate-oriented technical school. In short, I am eternally grateful for all the opporunities that have literally fallen into my lap because I came to Mudd.

Mudd has been a great home for me over the last four years, giving me opportunitites to get involved in everything from club volleyball to AE chemistry tutoring. I got to work with great people not only in the Chemistry Department, but also in Admissions, Development, Learning Programs, and the Office of Institutional Diversity. I'm leaving sunny California to start grad school at Michigan State University in the fall, where I will be studying to get a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry and a Masters in Forensic Science.
