3.   SAFETY TRAINING FORMAT

Tony suggested having a "round table discussion" rather than a safety training for the faculty sessions.  He would like to target more specific topics such as Chemical Hygiene and Ergonomics.

The Committee discussed the general safety plan matrix.  Annie suggested changing the format.  The Committee decided on the following:

a)  Hazard Communication, Five Basic Sessions (one hour)
b)  Chemical Hygiene and Hazardous Waste (45 minutes)
c)  Corporate Criminal Liability (30 minutes)
d)  Fire Extinguisher Training (one hour)

4.   FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING

Ramona said that 14 Dining Services employees are currently being trained in Community First Aid and CPR.  Two full-day sessions were held from 8am to 6pm.  The first session was taught in English on July 7, 2001.  A similar session was subsequently taught in Spanish. Both sessions were conducted at the Red Cross Center in Claremont, and feedback from both sessions has been positive.

Tony suggested that pictures be taken during the CPR training sessions, and that these pictures might be posted on the HMC Employee Safety Committee website.

5.   CLINIC PROJECTS

The Engineering clinic project descriptions will be forwarded to Tony for review.  He will make safety considerations and give suggestions relative to any potential safety hazards.  Annie inquired as to whether Nancy Hamlett, Chair of the Biology Department, plans to submit, for Tony's review, the descriptions of the Biology/Physics clinic team proposals.  Elaine will speak with Nancy Hamlett and inform Annie of her findings.

6.   OPEN DISCUSSION

A.  Annie asked if the Committee wanted a change in the format of the safety meetings (meeting time, food/snacks, etc.).  The consensus was to keep the format the same.

B.  Annie would like to submit something regarding safety to be published in the Wednesday Green Sheet.  Perhaps a paragraph of our Committee announcements or safety tips could be submitted.  Tony mentioned that if the publication dates of the Green Sheet are known, the Committee could obtain commercially published safety blurbs, and then add our meeting news and announcements.

C.  Annie suggested that a link be created, on the HMC Employee Safety Committee homepage, to the Green Sheet website. Annie will speak to Randy Ringen regarding the possibility. Tony suggested putting a "catchy" safety slogan on the Green Sheet.

Annie will speak with Craig Adkins about submitting a "Safety Question of the Week" on the HMC Employee Safety Committee website.

D.  Tony suggested that a report be given to the senior staff outlining the accomplishments of the Employee Safety Committee. The Committee unanimously agreed to accept Tony's suggestion.

Annie will contact Sheldon's office and request that time be allocated for a presentation during a future senior staff meeting. Annie will also prepare and deliver the presentation.

7.   Next meeting will be:  Friday, October 19, 2001 at 11:00am in the Stauffer Lounge

A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
