Agenda Items:
1. CHEMICAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
Professor Hal Van Ryswyk (Chemistry) has volunteered to serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for Harvey Mudd College. Since he will remain on sabbatical through the summer months, the Committee will not be seated until his return for the fall semester.
All Departments should continue their present procedures. See Lillian for ideas on chemical storage and labeling of hazardous waste.
For those HMC Departments that do not already have a Chemical Hygiene Plan, Tony has a "skeleton" that can be used.
2. CAMPUSWIDE DRILL
Kim May, Chair of the Emergency Response Committee, reported on the campuswide emergency evacuation drill. Participation was higher than in any previous drill.
The EMT will continue working on the evacuation sites to make them more recognizable. Efforts will also be directed toward having an intercampus emergency evacuation drill, possibly with Scripps College.
HMC will host a five-college emergency evacuation drill for 2001. Plans include involving the Claremont fire department, in addition to the Haz-Mat team.
3. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY
Training in fire extinguisher safety is scheduled for Friday, April 28, 2000, at 1:30 pm. Kim and Debra should notify the members of the ERT to attend.
Twenty-five (25) people can be accommodated. Contact Annie for reservations.
Participants should view the web video on the CUC EH&S Safety website before attending the training.
4. OPEN DISCUSSION
A. Annie will coordinate renewal of first aid and CPR certification. A July date will be scheduled.
B. Tony presented a video from Middlebury College on "Dorm Fire Safety." The video is available for purchase, and one has been ordered for each college.
The HMC Safety Committee will purchase a video for the Dean of Students Office. Additional copies will be purchased for HMC Safety Committee use.
C. The Safety Committee website was discussed. Links to all minutes older than one year will be deleted.
A link should be made on the HMC Safety Committee homepage to Tony's CUC EH&S Safety webpage. This will inform people about the videos and safety training available on the web.
Lillian will make website changes.
5. Next meeting will be: Friday, June 16, 2000, at 12:00 pm; lunch meeting at Applebee's.
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
