Tips for a Stress-Free Pre-Registration

By following these tips, you’re sure to have a stress-free pre-registration:

  • Start early to plan your classes. Don’t wait!
  • Yellow pre-registration card will be in your student mailbox on October 31, 2011
  • Mark your calendar with your web-registration start time
  • Check your selected classes for prerequisites and required PERMissions
  • Check the schedule of courses on portal for any recent changes
  • Check the printed addendum for updates to the printed schedule
  • Check for time conflicts between your selected classes
  • Write clearly and legibly on your web-reg card
  • Enter the full course number on your web-reg card to avoid entry errors
  • Have approved alternate classes listed on your web-reg card
  • Get all your adviser(s)’ signatures on your web-reg card
  • Obtain needed registration forms from web site or Registrar’s Office
  • Get all necessary PERMs and have conflict forms signed before your pre-reg time
  • Check the current enrollment status of your classes on the portal
  • Get your overload approval (if needed) before your web-registration time
  • Check that your student account is current so you can web-register
  • If you cannot make your web-registration time, get a proxy or drop off your card and forms

Instructor approval
If you are taking a class which requires instructor approval, you will need to obtain PERM from the instructor before the class can be added to your schedule.

Student Responsibility

It is the student's responsibility to enroll in classes and sports. An instructor may give approval, but you will be responsible for adding (or dropping) the class to your schedule.

Correct Units
Make sure you check the number of units that are entered into your schedule for any research, independent study or directed reading.  Is the correct number of units showing?

Off-Campus Courses
Registration for other Claremont College courses is done on your home campus. Please note that while courses from the other Claremont Colleges may show seats available on the portal and website, the number of seats available to each of the non-hosting colleges may be limited. Some courses are closed to cross-registration (Check the "Comments" on the Schedule of Classes.). PERM approval may be given to a student after that limit has been reached. Each class is different and in some cases permission may not be given until class has started, if at all.  This is to allow the hosting college's students the first opportunity to register.  Check with the instructor for their particulars.

Course Limits
Courses may have limited number of seats for HMC students.  This information is viewable by using the VIEW button on the course listing on the portal and web. PERM instructor approval allows you to register even if HMC limit has been reached. This may not be given until the first day of class, if at all.

Class Conflicts
Classes with overlapping times require a Class Conflict form to be filled out and signed by both course instructors showing how the conflict is being resolved. If this form has not been completed at the time of pre-registration, you will only be allowed to add one of these classes to your schedule.

Alternate electives
It is strongly recommended that you have alternate electives chosen in the event that a desired class is full. If needed, there are extra lines and special instruction space on the back of the pre-reg card. If you have a "later" start time, this is especially important because classes are more likely to be full. HSA course alternates which are not on your pre-registration card do not require your HSA adviser's signature beforehand during pre-registration. You will however be required to notify your HSA adviser in writing within 24 hours of using a non-approved alternate HSA class. This alternate choice is subject to HSA adviser's approval.

Adviser approval
It is a recommended that you make arrangements to see your adviser(s) as early as possible. Each adviser has many advisees and you each have individual schedules to accommodate. If you cannot locate your adviser, the related dept. chair can sign for his faculty in some cases. Don't expect to find your adviser for a signature at the last moment.

Full/Closed Class
If a class is full, a PERM approval of the instructor can get you into the class.

HMC Wait Lists
If a HMC class is full, you can ask to be put on the class wait list. When space becomes available, students are notified of the open space in the order the student got on the wait list. It is expected that the student will respond quickly about taking the open space so that others on the wait list can be notified if the first student on the list no longer wants the class. You cannot be in one section of a class and wait list for another section of the same class.

Lost Forms
