Research, directed reading and independent study courses require the signature of the instructor on your web-registration card or the appropriate approval form (PDF). Only one such course (or the equivalent of 3 units) may be taken per semester. Be sure the number of units is clearly stated on the appropriate form. The appropriate approval form is required, along with a Course Add/Drop form (PDF) if this is added after you have web-registered.
