HMC
MAP: Multicultural Ally Program

Mission, Goals, and Objectives

Social Justice Ally: a member of a majority group who works to end the system of oppression that gives that group greater power and privilege.*

The mission of the Harvey Mudd College Multicultural Ally Program (MAP) is to publicly promote the value of difference among people at HMC, and to demonstrate how this difference is essential to the success of the College. MAP also provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn about people different from themselves, interact with people about topics that are difficult to discuss, and be encouraged to take action to promote social equity.

The goals of MAP allies are to:

  1. Spark appreciation for the diversity of HMC community members.
  2. Learn about the cultures and perspectives of people represented at HMC.
  3. Develop skills to interact with differing people.
  4. Advocate with, and on behalf of, other people.
  5. Help create an HMC where everyone succeeds in attaining their goals.
MAP allies’ objectives are to:

  1. Investigate your personal and group identities.
  2. Recognize and examine your prejudices toward other people.
  3. Acknowledge the privileges you have in relation to other people.
  4. Read about and talk with people from different backgrounds.
  5. Learn how to supportively listen and talk with people.
  6. Learn about the specialized resources for people at the Claremont Colleges.
  7. Challenge behaviors that disrespect community members.
  8. Translate your knowledge of and commitment to social justice to become a better citizen of Claremont, the U.S., and the world.
