Information about the position: Starting hourly rate is dependent upon qualifications.  Usual working hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department. Overtime may be required during busy periods. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position that reports to the Interim Plant Operations Manager.

What the successful candidate will do: The Facilities and Maintenance Department - Plant Operations supports the College's mission by maintaining equipment, buildings and systems.  Under the general direction of the Interim Plant Operations Manager, the Director of Facilities and in collaboration with other Facilities staff, the Electrical Maintenance Mechanic performs a range of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of facilities. The primary focus of this position is electrical systems and includes troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing and installing electrical and related equipment using appropriate tools and equipment, and by referencing schematics, diagrams, manuals and drawings. Equipment to be maintained includes but is not limited to: switchgear, generators, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, roof top air handling units, pumps, and exhaust fans.  Other duties include inspecting, testing, adjusting, repairing and cleaning mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. 

Essential Functions:

• Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, diagnose problems and repair and/or replace electrical equipment, mechanical and plumbing fixtures, valves, devices, and appliances which include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual preventive maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment;
  • Opening clogged toilets and drains and repairing leaking plumbing fixtures;
  • Replacing smoke detectors and resetting breakers;
  • Repairing minor electrical such as lighting, ballasts, and exhaust fans;
  • Replacing light bulbs, lamps, fluorescent fixtures, light switches and receptacles;
  • Repairing and ordering parts for janitorial and kitchen equipment;
  • Set up temporary electrical for events.
• Perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of campus buildings, facilities and equipment including but not limited to the following specific tasks:
  • Applying various types of paint, i.e. primers, sealers, oil, water, rubber, vinyl or cement based paints; preparing surfaces as necessary;
  • Preparing and finishing new or used shelving, laboratory or furniture and equipment;
  • Cleaning and installing vinyl, rubber and asphalt tile and sheet vinyl floor coverings, sanding or filling imperfections, etching, etc.;
  • Repairing windows, doors, hardware, screens, and furniture.
• Observe and report, through the work order system, any and all defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on campus facilities. Notify a Supervisor of Facilities Maintenance or another supervisor if immediate assistance or action is required. Report discrepancies or necessary follow-ups to supervisor.
• Work as part of a team assisting other facilities and maintenance staff with daily assignments and projects on an as-needed basis.
• Assist with communication to or directly communicate with internal faculty and staff regarding the status of repairs and replacement.
• Comply with safety regulations and policies.
• Maintain a professional and courteous manner with faculty, staff and students.
• Maintain knowledge and skills.
• Perform other duties and tasks as needed and as assigned.

What the ideal candidate will bring to this position and HMC:
Required Qualifications:

• High school graduation or equivalent and completion of a recognized electrician's apprenticeship, or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
• Must have valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurer.
• Demonstrated ability to use a variety of hand and power tools related to job duties.
• Proven mechanical knowledge and ability to perform preventive maintenance, repair and replacement of electrical, plumbing, painting, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams and an in-depth knowledge of electrical systems and inspection/troubleshooting techniques.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply safe practices and precautions.
• General knowledge of techniques used for finishing exterior surfaces, interior walls, ceilings and floor surfaces.
• Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist level without assistance, climb ladders, and be able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time; ability to access and work on building roofs.
• Willingness and ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime (including evenings and weekends).
• Ability to interact well with faculty, staff and student populations.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to prioritize work and use time and materials effectively and efficiently.
• Ability to use a computerized work order system.
• Basic knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office products including Outlook and Internet Explorer to perform electronic research for purchasing parts, referencing maintenance procedures and material safety data sheets.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience managing low voltage systems such as controls, and fire alarms.
• Experience in private or public educational facility.
• California C10 electrical contractor's license.
