Information about the position: Salary is dependent upon qualifications. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position reporting to the Director of Career Services.

What the successful candidate will do:

  • Direct external relations with employers and graduate schools.
  • Serve as the lead coordinator for HMC's NACElink career management system.
  • Meet with representatives at the other Claremont Colleges on a regular basis to have consistency on the career management system.
  • Act as a revenue generator for the office through career fairs and other activities.
  • Provide individual and group career counseling services to current students.
  • Provide career-related advising which includes, but not limited to, graduate and professional school and job and internship advising.
  • In concert with the Director and the Career Counselor, plan, create, and deliver workshops and outreach programs to faculty and students.
  • Create career and graduate school related materials for the web or publication.

Essential Functions:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Train and supervise Administrative Assistant, Career Counselor and student assistants entering data into the career management system.
  • Oversee the Administrative Assistant and student assistants with maintaining all internship and full-time listings for the e-newsletters.

Program Development and Management:

  • Manage and coordinate the Joint-Colleges NACElink/Symplicity recruiting system for HMC through:
    • Initiating and enforcing recruiting policies.
    • Organizing and setting the annual recruiting calendar, including all deadlines and processes.
    • Scheduling dates for employer/graduate school information sessions, interviews, and other events.
    • Overseeing the scheduling of rooms for interviews/events; advertising the event.
    • Soliciting employers for presentations, interviews, and full-time/internship postings.
    • Joining employers and graduate school representatives for lunch/dinner and ensuring they have everything needed for their recruiting session.
    • With the assistance of the Administrative Assistant, publicizing recruiting events and opportunities via listservs, websites, student groups, and academic departments.
  • Serve as the lead coordinator for all career fairs through:
    • Soliciting organizations to attend the event.
    • Coordinating logistics with the Administrative Assistant and Career Counselor, including billing of employers, career fair set-up and execution of event.
    • Promoting career fairs through various advertisement methods and following-up through multiple correspondences to ensure the fairs are well-attended by employers and students.
  • Work with Director on employer development; expand new employment and internship opportunities through emails and phone calls.
  • Advise employers on comprehensive marketing strategies appropriateness of employer expectations, on-campus recruiting processes, job descriptions, salary negotiations.
  • Conduct surveys of employers and students about the quality of their recruiting or career fair experience and develop strategies and recommendations for improvement/modifications in response to feedback.
  • Plan and present recruiting-related programs for students.
  • Educate students on the recruiting process and policies and technical aspects thereof.
  • Maintain statistics and other data to produce an annual report that summarizes each year's recruiting activities.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead coordinator for HMC's NACElink career management system.
  • Collaborate with other Claremont Colleges regarding use of NACElink by attending monthly meetings.
  • Provide training for students, staff/faculty, and employers on the use of the career management system.
  • Play a key role in identifying and evaluating commercial software appropriate for use in recruiting and improvements or modifications to office procedures to enable effective use of computer applications.
  • Assist with the maintenance of current as well as the future redesign of the website.
  • Create and maintain social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more.
  • Create and generate a range of recruiting reports.

General Counseling/Advising and Student Outreach Responsibilities:

  • In advising sessions with students, determine the initial career services that are needed and make referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide career and/or graduate/professional school advising.
    • Meet with students and discuss their career interests or post-undergraduate plans and provide feedback on the structure of their plans.
    • Instruct students on where to find information on these topics
  • Help students formulate a career plan of action.
    • Use a counseling approach that empowers students, while providing them with enough support and resources to be able to rely on their own decision making processes
  • Refer students to appropriate resources if additional counseling services are necessary.
  • Show students how to prepare written materials and provide feedback on those materials.
    • Critique resumes, cover letters, graduate school essays, personal statements, and application materials.
  • Answer questions and help students find resource materials.
  • Advertise opportunities and events to students that match their interests.
    • Whenever appropriate, physically show constituents how to navigate OCS online resources, locate other resources on-line or in OCS and Honnold/Mudd library, and utilize the career management system.
  • Maintain up-to-date and relevant resources to assist students in their search for career/education related information.
    • Continually search for new resources to be able to direct students to in their search for information.
  • Conduct mock interviews to assist students for interview preparation.
  • Record meetings with students in career management system.

Other Responsibilities:   

  • Oversee the Administrative Assistant, Career Counselor and student assistants in producing the weekly e-newsletters.
  • Strategically expand the range of employer recruiting activities.
  • Communicate with the Director, Career Counselor and Administrative Assistant about projects.
  • Be a team player by contributing to projects, programs, and office tasks. This includes but is not limited to: OCS programming, office initiatives, career fairs, answering phones, and front desk coverage.
  • Attend any meetings that are required.
  • Stay up-to-date on trends in the career development field.
  • Attend relevant conferences and webinars for your professional development.
  • Represent the office at HMC events.
  • Be knowledgeable about OCS resources and the NACElink career management system.
  • Provide good customer service to students, employers, staff, and faculty through a positive attitude, listening to their needs, and following-up as promised.
  • Coordinate with the Financial Aid office to train HMC faculty/staff on how to use the career management system to post on-campus job opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What the ideal candidate will bring to this position and HMC:
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 1.5 -2 years of experience with career counseling, career development, student affairs and/or human resources recruiting, public relations, or a closely related field
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurance carrier.
  • Must be very comfortable with technology and recruiting systems.
  • Advanced or expert in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Skillful in using the Internet, having particularly strong search skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong presentation skills for small and large groups.
  • Some marketing and data management skills.
  • Some knowledge of the STEM liberal arts curriculum and how to work with those students.
  • Excellent team orientation and ability to work with staff on variety of projects.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment with limited guidance.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with all constituents (faculty, staff, colleagues, students, employers).
  • Ability to advise employers tactfully on appropriateness of professional behavior and marketing strategies.
  • Demonstrated professional demeanor at all times, and especially when multi-tasking and being required to enforce policy.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to remain organized despite frequent interruptions is essential.
  • Ability to think creatively and identify innovative solutions.
  • Ability to manage high level of email correspondence.
  • Ability and willingness to travel out-of-town for career program as well as professional conferences.
  • Knowledge of labor market trends and job search methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience with NACElink/Symplicity career management system.
  • Experience with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Linked.
  • Microsoft Publisher experience.
  • 3+ years of experience with career counseling, career development or human resources.
  • Experience working in a liberal arts college environment.
  • Some supervisory experience.
