Chris Sundberg, who has been at Harvey Mudd College since the fall of 1997, coordinates the gamut of student activities, including new student orientation/pre-orientation outdoor adventures, distribution of activity funds, coordination of volunteer programs, and registration and follow-up of on-campus parties. In addition to supervising the operation of the Linde Activities Center, Mudd’s hub of students’ personal fitness activities, Chris—known as the "Dean of Fun"—also promotes participation in the Strauss Internship for Social Understanding, the Linde Activities Center high school tutoring program, the SuperSponsor first year experience program, and leadership training workshops. Chris also advises HMC's Muddraker newspaper and Spectrum yearbook staffs, the Campus Activities Programming board, the ASHMC Social Committee, the Mudders Making a Difference volunteer committee, and the Linde Activities Student Supervisors. Furthermore, he teaches a weekly Bible study, a basketball class, and the weekly "Running of the Deans" fitness program. With staff from the five undergraduate Claremont Colleges, he also presents alcohol awareness programs and other cooperative theme and special event programming.
Prior to HMC, Chris worked as a hall director at Pitzer College for two years. He spent the next six years as assistant director of student activities and community service/volunteer coordinator at the Caltech Y at the California Institute of Technology. There, he put together a range of activities and services, from the weeklong orientation hike to emergency student loans. Chris has also coordinated community service programs at the Union Station Homeless Shelter, the Five Acres Home for Abused Children, and the Pasadena AIDS Service Center.
Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in both business administration and art from the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona and a master’s degree in college student affairs from Azusa Pacific University. For several years, he also ran his own greeting card company (he designs the greeting cards for the Dean of Students' 21st birthday card program), which included designing book covers, company logos and wall murals. On the technical side, following his graduation from Cal Poly Pomona, Chris was a production control manager at Deutsch Aerospace.
