In celebration of the vital role of chemistry and its contributions to humankind, Harvey Mudd College is joining with organizations around the world to commemorate the International Year of Chemistry. Speakers in the Dr. Bruce J. Nelson '74 Speaker Series will share exciting new developments in chemistry and describe potential opportunities for current and future scientists, whose work is essential in preserving the environment, utilizing energy, developing materials and promoting health.

Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, American Chemical Society
Madeleine Jacobs is the first woman to serve as CEO of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, with approximately 163,000 members worldwide. As a much-honored science journalist, and internationally sought after public speaker, she brings an extensive familiarity and understanding of the chemistry enterprise.

In addition to a 40+ year career at the University of Oxford, Peter Atkins is a prolific author of both popular chemistry textbooks and science books for the general public. The best known of these is Physical Chemistry, now in its ninth edition; it is used throughout the world and has been translated into many languages.

Bren Professor of Chemistry at California Institute of Technology
An inspiring researcher and outstanding teacher, Peter Dervan has pioneered a field of chemistry with studies in understanding the chemical principles for the sequence-specific recognition of DNA. He and his co-workers have created cell permeable small molecules that may be useful for the external control of abnormal gene expression relevant in human disease.
