DUNS stands for Data Universal Numbering System. The DUNS number is a unique nine-digit code assigned to organizations by the business information firm Dun & Bradstreet. The federal government typically requires entities with which it does business to have a DUNS number.
The Employer Identification Number (EIN)—also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number—is a nine-digit code assigned by the Internal Revenue Service. It is used to identify corporations and organizations, including non-profits, who must file tax returns. The EIN is used by the National Science Foundation, for example, and is provided automatically to proposals submitted via FastLane.
