CIS makes available various programs for use by persons affiliated with Harvey Mudd College. The majority of these programs are covered under one of the licensing agreements below.
- Microsoft Campus Agreement
- Apple TAP
- MatLab Licensing
- Maple Licensing
- Mathematica Licensing
- Sophos Licensing
Other programs are covered under the keyserver licensing system, which is covered in more detail on its own page.
Microsoft Campus Agreeement
HMC has licensed a number of Microsoft products under the Microsoft Campus Agreement. The following Microsoft products are included:
- Microsoft Office Professional and Macintosh Editions
- Microsoft Windows Desktop Operating System Upgrades
- Microsoft Visio® Professional Edition
- Microsoft FrontPage®
- Microsoft Visual Studio® Academic
- Microsoft Project Standard
Under the terms of this agreement, these applications can be installed on any college-owned computer. Unfortunately, because of the restrictions of our agreement with Microsoft, we cannot check out installation disks to faculty and staff anymore. Please contact the Help Desk to schedule an appointment if you need to have any of these software packages installed on a college-owned computer.
Our agreement also includes a provision for faculty and staff to obtain home-use licenses of Microsoft software. Faculty and staff have three options for home-use installations:
- Faculty and staff can contact the CIS Help Desk to schedule an appointment where they can bring in their home computer to have the software installed. Faculty and staff must first sign the Microsoft Campus Agreement Work At Home Acceptance Form which limits use of the software to their work at Harvey Mudd College. Appointments will be made as time permits.
- Faculty and staff can visit the web site at http://old.foundationccc.org/msca/default.aspx to request a home-use license and software media. Software obtained from this web site is still covered under the Microsoft Campus Agreement Work At Home program which limits use of the software to their work at Harvey Mudd College. There is a small fee charged for the software media (eg. $55 for Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac and $51 for Microsoft Office XP Pro).
- Faculty and staff can visit the web site at http://www.journeyed.com/aiccu/ to purchase copies of Microsoft software at about a 75% discount. Software purchased from this web site is NOT limited by the Microsoft Campus Agreement Work At Home restrictions.
The Microsoft Campus Agreement does NOT cover student computers. Microsoft Office and other Microsoft applications available on the Windows 2000 servers have been keyed so that they cannot be run on dorm computers. However, students can visit the web site at http://www.journeyed.com/aiccu/ and order software at about a 75% discount.
Apple Technology Assurance Program
The Apple Technology Assurance Program (TAP) is a three-year license agreeement with Apple Computer to provide upgrades to the Apple Macintosh OS X operating system. CIS has purchased enough licenses to cover all Macintosh computers that CIS has purchased for the college. This includes all of our lab Macintosh computers, Macintosh computers purchased by CIS for administrative staff, and all Macintosh computers purchased under the PC's for Faculty program. Deparments who have purchased Macintosh computers may choose to purchase a license through CIS to cover these computers.Faculty and staff who have a college-owned Macintosh computer that is licensed through the Apple TAP program can also upgrade one home Macintosh computer under the Home Use provision of the license agreement:
"The primary user may also install and use, in addition to the computers expressly licensed herein, a copy of the Software on a home or portable computer that is primarily used by that same user. Otherwise, Licensee shall not use the Software without an express separate license for that computer. Upon cessation of enrollment at an institution, HiEd students who have installed a copy of the Software for Home Use will obtain a perpetual license to use the then current release of the Software, but shall not be entitled to any Program Software after the date of cessation of enrollment."
For more information on the Apple TAP program please contact Elizabeth_Hodas@hmc.edu.
MatLab Licensing
MatLab is provided to the HMC community under two different licenses: the Academic License (also referred to as the Research License) and the Classroom License.
Academic License
MatLab is available for use by HMC students, faculty, and staff and can be installed on student computers and faculty and staff desktops and laptops. You must be connected to the HMC network in order to run the Academic License version of MatLab so that the client software can connect to the HMC MatLab Academic License server. The Academic License may be used for both research and classroom instruction. Use of the Academic License is restricted as follows (excerpted from The MathWorks, Inc. Software License Agreement):
"Programs licensed to degree-granting educational institutions at MathWorks' Academic License discount are restricted to use in connection with on-campus computing facilities that are used solely in support of classroom instruction and research activities of students, teaching faculty and staff, and research staff. The right to use the Programs for any other purposes, including commercial purposes, is expressly prohibited."
The MatLab client software can be installed from the following locations on Charlie, the academic Windows 2003 server:
- Windows version: Charlie.Dist-Software/PC/

Maple Licensing
HMC has a site license for Maple software. Maple can be run on faculty, staff, and student computers and is installed on all CIS lab computers as well as in other departmental labs. Students and faculty can check out a CD from the CIS Help Desk in Parsons B148 in order to install a standalone copy of Maple. The student license expires on an annual basis. The faculty license does not expire.
Faculty and students can also install a networked version of Maple for the Macintosh. A network connection is required in order to connect to the Maple license server. The installer is located on Charlie:
- Mac OS X version: Charlie.Mac/OS X Applications/Math-Graphing/
Mathematica Licensing
During the summer of 2006 CIS also negotiated a site license for Mathematica for The Claremont Collges. The license covers all Harvey Mudd College-owned computers, faculty and staff home use, and student use. Mathematica is installed in all of the CIS computer labs. To install Mathematica on a student machine, office computer, or home computer please follow the instructions below:
Faculty and staff office or laptop installations on college-owned computers:
CDs will be available for check-out at the Help Desk for installation on college-owned computers. During the installation process you will be asked for the site license number, which will be provided with the CD. The Mathematica software will then generate a machine-specific MathID which you will use to register the software on the web and obtain a machine-specific password. The password is sent to you via email and a copy is sent to the administrator. These disks are NOT to be used for installation on personally-owned computers for home use.
Faculty and staff home use on personally-owned computers:
To install on a personally-owners you must use a web form located at:
http://www.wolfram.com/siteinfo/academic/homeuse.cgi
You will need the site license number to request a home-use license. Please contact Elizabeth Hodas for the license number.
You will also need to provide proof of eligibility. Wolfram lists the following as acceptable forms of proof:
* Current school web page, such as an online directory, that verifies your status
* Photocopy of your current school ID
* Photocopy of your current student registration (students only)
* Photocopy of your last pay stub (faculty/staff only)
* Letter on school letterhead from the chair of the department or head of the college/school confirming your status
* Email from the chair of the department or head of the college/school confirming your status
You will then have the option of downloading the software or requesting a CD.
Student use:
Installers for Mathematica for students are available on Charlie in the following directories:
- Windows version: Charlie.Dist-Software/PC/
- Linux version: Charlie:Dist-Software/Linux/
- Mac OS X version: Charlie.Mac/OS X Applications/Math-Graphing/
During the installation process you will be asked for the site license number, which is provided in a PDF in the same directory. The Mathematica software will then generate a machine-specific MathID which you will use to register the software on the web and obtain a machine-specific password. The password is sent to you via email and a copy is sent to the administrator.
Sophos Licensing
CIS has purchased a site license for Sophos Anti-virus which covers students, faculty, and staff. Instructions for downloading, installing and configuring Sophos are available at:
