HMC
A fourth round of Strategic Vision funds—made possible by the generosity of the HMC trustees—was recently awarded for the spring 2009 semester.
The President’s Cabinet received 18 proposals from HMC students, faculty and staff, and identified and funded three of those that would best advance one or more of HMC’s six Strategic Vision goals. Various departments and grants funded three other proposals.
The following is a list and short summary of the proposals that received funding, the maximum award being $5,000:
Awardees: Vatche Sahakian, assistant professor of physics; Julian Feed-Brown '10 and James Blau '10
Awarded $1,420 to design and build a 50-inch prototype multi-touch display for use in HMC’s Platt Campus Center and classrooms. In recent years, there has been a great deal of innovation and progress in the area of multi-touch displays, which interface with a computer to provide a digital realization of the classroom blackboard, bringing new possibilities in a traditional framework for instruction and collaborative interactions.
---
Awardee: Karen Taggart '77, associate director of HMC alumni relations
Awarded $2,210 to help cover the expenses of a robotics competition proposed by the Alumni Board of Governors for HMC alumni and students. In the contest, 12 teams would have 24 hours to assemble robot kits and enable their robots to perform a specific challenge. Faculty members will judge the teams’ creations.
---
Awardee: Angelica Ibarra, diversity programs coordinator
Awarded $5,000 to have a new audiovisual system installed in HMC’s Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons. The system would help facilitate events, such as those for Black History Month, Latino Heritage Month and Chinese New Year, hosted throughout the year by HMC’s Office of Institutional Diversity.
---
Awardee: Shenda Baker, professor of chemistry
Awarded $4,800 from the Global Endeavor Fund to cover airfare expenses for three HMC students to fly to Singapore, as part of an effort to expand HMC’s Global Clinic Program [http://www.hmc.edu/academicsclinicresearch/clinicprogram1/globalclinicprogram.html] from its pilot phase toward a sustainable model. In partnership with the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, next year’s projects will involve the removal of naturally occurring arsenic from water in Cambodia and monitoring seismic activity and global climate change on the Pacific Rim, primarily in Sumatra, Indonesia.
---
Awardee: Claire O’Hanlon '09
Awarded $2,400 from the Jacobs Entrepreneurial Studies Center to help cover travel expenses for a group of 11 HMC students to attend Power Shift ‘09, a summit drawing 12,000 young Americans to the Capitol to focus on environmental action and policy regarding climate change, green energy and environmental justice.
---
Awardee: Darryl Yong, assistant professor of mathematics
Awarded $1,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Dean’s Career Enhancement Fund to help cover the expenses of HMC’s fourth annual Imagine Math Day, an event in which high school mathematics teachers and students are invited to campus to indulge in a day of exciting mathematical activities, exploration and inquiry centering around data analysis.
