Progress Report on 2008-09 Academic Year Goals

  • Support development of the new curriculum so that it fulfills the goals of the Strategic Vision.

The Faculty is hard at work planning the next steps required to implement the new curriculum. During the summer, groups worked to develop a new advising system and choice labs, and trained for the pilot of the new writing and elective courses. The work to restructure the mathematics and chemistry core curricula, along with the redesign of the mechanics lab took place over the summer. We are thrilled to report that the Mellon Foundation generously awarded Harvey Mudd College $419,000 to support the core curriculum revision.

  • Develop plans for a new teaching and learning building that is a showcase for the college's commitment to student learning and the academic excellence.

Members of the Harvey Mudd College community, including faculty, staff, and students met during the spring semester to discuss programming needs for a new teaching and learning building. This Teaching and Learning Programming Committee guided the interactions of the campus with Boora architects. Work is now underway on schematic designs for the new building, as well as planning for the vacated campus space. Several campus forums are planned for Sept.

  • Develop and obtain trustee approval for campaign plan to support implementation of the college's strategic vision.

The college continues to make steady progress toward readiness for an ambitious fundraising campaign. The college engaged fundraising consultants Marts & Lundy who have completed an internal assessment of the college's overall preparedness for campaign and presented its findings at the May Board of Trustees meeting, providing a roadmap to future campaign. Additionally, preliminary work began on marketing and branding research with communications consultants Lipman Hearne. The reorganization of the Office of College Advancement will poise the fundraising team for even more targeted, professional and efficient action in the months and years ahead.

  • Expand the board of trustees by adding four additional trustees, including one academic leader.

The Board Affairs Commitee has recommended the election of one new trustee and that election is currently underway. Members of the commitee are also in discussions with two other candidates. The economic downturn has cased the process to lengthen and some earlier candidates to decline or postpone their decisions.

  • Develop an information technology plan.

Harvey Mudd College expects to have a high-level IT strategy document approved by faculty and trustees in fall 2009. The document will cover IT governance, IT infrastructure, innovation and the central IT organization at HMC.

  • Conduct and complete a national search for a new Vice President/Dean of Students.

On June 15, 2009, Marguerite "Maggie" Browning joined the Harvey Mudd College community. For more information, please visit http://www.hmc.edu/specialinterestfeatures/cabinetatwork/browning.html

  • Develop a plan to improve the availability and disbursement of financial aid beginning with the 2009-10 academic year.

Due to our end-of-year surplus, the college was able to transfer additional funds into the financial aid budget for the 2009-10 academic year. Additionally, the Office of Financial Aid is currently evaluating the effectiveness of the Harvey S. Mudd scholarships and will consider revising the reward process.
