As vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, Robert Cave is responsible for overseeing all of Harvey Mudd College’s academic matters—from hiring new faculty and working with current professors to developing new programs and establishing academic policies.

Professional Background:

Cave began his 20th year as a faculty member at HMC in 2007. He also served as the college’s associate dean of academic affairs and director of the Study Abroad Program from 2003 to 2007. Prior to joining Harvey Mudd College, Cave was a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University.

Education:

Cave holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical physics from Michigan State University and a doctoral degree in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology, where he worked with Nobel laureate Rudy Marcus and Bill Goddard, both known for their work in theoretical chemistry. Cave completed his postdoctoral fellowship in 1988 at Indiana University.

Additional Information:

Cave is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society. He was a National Science Foundation Predoctoral Fellow, a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher Scholar, and recently received the Henry T. Mudd Prize at Harvey Mudd College. Cave has been a visiting scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and a visiting professor at Rutgers University. His research interests are in electronic structure theory and theoretical treatments of electron transfer reactions.
