HMC Receives Math for America Program Grant

Harvey Mudd College (HMC) has received a $150,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations in support of its participation in Math for America Los Angeles. The grant will fund academic and professional development for Math for America fellows during a two-year period.

Math for America Los Angeles is a collaborative project operated by HMC, Claremont Graduate University (CGU) and the University of Southern California (USC). The program recruits, trains and financially supports prospective high school teachers, who are highly qualified in mathematics, as they prepare for careers in teaching.

HMC’s Darryl Yong, assistant professor of mathematics, serves as a mentor in the program and coordinates HMC’s involvement.

Through its efforts, Math for America, for which HMC President Maria Klawe serves as a board member, addresses the related problems of inadequate math skills and high attrition among math teachers. Fellows enroll in master’s degree programs at either CGU or USC, and then enter the teaching work force in greater Los Angeles.

By 2011, Math for America will have supported at least 440 teachers. The program offers a stipend to fellows and supplements their salary, ensuring that they earn amounts comparable to other professionals with similar levels of education and training.

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, located in Jacksonville, Fla., support higher education, including liberal arts education, secondary education, graduate theological education, health care and public television.

Fletcher Jones Foundation Grant Kicks Off IT Upgrade

The Fletcher Jones Foundation has awarded Harvey Mudd College (HMC) $750,000 in support of its recently launched educational technology infrastructure upgrade.

The gift, which will support staff development and a new digital learning commons for students and faculty, comes at a time when the new strategic plan for HMC’s information technology (IT) begins refocusing college resources on the needs of teaching, learning and research, and revives the role of faculty leaders in IT planning.

“We are delighted to have received this grant and very excited about the idea of working in partnership with faculty and students to enhance the already excellent educational opportunities at Harvey Mudd College,” said Joseph Vaughan, chief information officer and vice president of computing and information services (CIS). “We know that the college, through CIS, needs to do more in the area of educational technology by way of dedicated staff and dedicated spaces. The Fletcher Jones Foundation grant will allow us to take the first big steps in this direction.”

HHMI Awards $1.5 Million Grant to HMC

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Harvey Mudd College (HMC) to create more engaging science classes, bring real-world research experiences to students and increase the diversity of students who study science.

The grant, which will be paid over four years, is part of $60 million in grants recently announced by HHMI. The awards were the results of a competition that invited 226 of the nation’s leading baccalaureate-granting institutions to apply. There were 192 proposals submitted, and, after three rounds of peer-review, 48 grants were awarded.

More than a quarter of the awardees have never received an HHMI grant before. HMC has received three consecutive grants, beginning in 2000, then renewed in 2004 and again in 2008, for a total of $4.2 million.

The R.C. Baker Foundation announced a grant of $500,000 to fund scholarships and student research fellowships. The Orange, Calif.-based foundation is a longtime supporter of the college and is making this commitment, in part, in honor of HMC trustee E.H. “Hubie” Clark and his wife, Patty.
