Internal Grant Opportunities

In-house sources of funding exist to support faculty research and professional development. There are currently four internal grant programs:

The Beckman Research Fund
The Beckman Fund provides grants for faculty research in all disciplines.  Preference is given to junior faculty and more senior faculty members who are pursuing new directions in their research. Funds may be used for summer salary, student stipends, equipment and travel. These grants are capped at $10,000. A call for proposals is issued each year in the fall by the Faculty Research Committee. Learn more…

The Center for Environmental Studies
The Center for Environmental Studies (CES) grants are intended to support student research. All CES-supported projects must have a faculty advisor, though proposals may be initiated by students or faculty. Research projects may be centered in science, engineering, mathematics, social sciences, the humanities or a combination of fields. Learn more…

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Sub-Grants
HMC’s current grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute provides funding for interdisciplinary research projects in biology and one or more other disciplines. Projects should include the meaningful participation of HMC students, but may include a collaborator at another institution. Learn more…

Mellon Faculty Career Enhancement Program
HMC, together with Scripps College and six other members of a “cluster” of colleges and universities, participates in a program of professional development for faculty funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The final year of the current grant for this purpose is 2006-07. However, it is possible that the program will be renewed with additional funding from the Mellon Foundation.
