Harvey Mudd College is a college where nearly all students choose to live on campus in our residence halls. These residences form the primary social community for most students. While the academic mission of the college is preeminent at Mudd, students’ dorm life consumes the majority of their time on campus and serves an important role in their personal, social and academic development. The goal of our residential life program is to support, complement and enhance the academic mission of the college. We do this by providing personal support, promoting developmental growth and teaching the advantages and limits of an interdependent community.
The Harvey Mudd College campus life program begins with the proctor staff. Proctors live in each of the eight residence halls and help create an environment of support and respect. They are HMC seniors who are members of the Dean of Students Office (DOS) staff. Proctors are trained in crisis intervention, counseling, first aid, CPR, conflict mediation, issues of diversity and multiculturalism, event programming, fire safety and disaster preparedness. They are available to discuss personal or academic matters, help students figure out what to do or who to see to resolve a problem and give students access to their rooms when they are locked out. Proctors’ names and cell phone numbers can be found in the directory section of this handbook.
Responsibility for students’ living conditions on campus is shared between the Dean of Students Office and the Facilities and Maintenance Office (F&M). Generally, “people” issues are handled by DOS, while “building” issues are the province of F&M. Obviously, many situations apply to both areas and the two offices collaborate often. F&M manages the maintenance of all the residence halls and supervises the building attendants, groundskeepers and maintenance personnel. If residents have maintenance repairs or concerns, they should use the work order system. Instructions are on page 76. If you have questions on other campus life issues, you may contact Guy Gerbick, the Dean of Residential Life (DORL), at ggerbick@hmc.edu or x18301, or Chris Cook, Assistant Director of F&M, at ccook@hmc.edu or x18226. The Dean of Students Office website is at www.hmc.edu/about/administrativeoffices/dos.html, while the F&M site is at www.hmc.edu/about/administrativeoffices/fm.html.
The remainder of this section organizes the range of dorm issues into several categories: people, issues, rooms, dorms and safety and security.
