Academic Regulations
Academic Regulations are established by the faculty. Unless otherwise indicated in the college catalogue, exceptions to these regulations require the approval of the Scholarly Standing Committee (SSC). Written petitions for exceptions should be submitted to the Registrar for the committee.
Academic Standing
At the end of each semester, the records of all students are reviewed. Students who do not meet the requirements of satisfactory progress, as defined by the Grade Point Average (GPA) in the major, the overall GPA, and the grades of the previous semester, will have their academic records reviewed by the Scholarly Standing Committee(www.hmc.edu/about/administrativeoffices/registrar1/scholarlystandingcommittee.html). Students who do not meet the requirements for satisfactory progress may be notified as to the reasons for their change in status as well as the requirements for returning to full status. Listed below are some of the guidelines used by the Scholarly Standing
Committee:
Warning. This status is applied to students who are not in serious academic trouble, but nonetheless have academic deficiencies in their core requirements. Students placed on warning remain in good academic standing, but are notified that improvement is expected. Generally, a student is placed “on warning” if the semester GPA falls below 2.00 and/or the student is deficient in a required core course.
Probation. The status of probation is a formal change in academic status and is, therefore, recorded on the student’s academic record. Probation serves as an official warning to the student that academic improvement is required, or he or she faces being declared ineligible to reregister. Generally, a student is placed on probation if the semester GPA falls below 1.8, and the student has accumulated and/or repeated core deficiencies past deadlines given for the student to improve by the SSC. Any student who has been placed on academic probation is ineligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics. All students have the right to appeal to the Scholarly Standing Committee for release from probation prior to the end of the semester.
While approval of such a request is rare, the decision of the committee would be based on performance indicators (i.e. midterm exams).
Ineligible to Reregister. A student who is declared ineligible to reregister (ITR) generally will fit into one of the following categories: a student who is on probation and fails to make substantial improvement in his or her academic record; a student who has deficiencies in core courses after his or her fifth semester; a student who satisfactorily completes less than half the normal academic load; a student whose cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 or whose semester GPA is below 2.00 for two semesters; or a junior or senior whose cumulative or major GPA is less than 2.00. A student who is determined to be ITR may petition for readmission through the Scholarly Standing Committee after an absence of one semester. Also see the HMC Catalogue for more information about academic standing.
Changing of Courses—Add/Drop/Withdrawal
A student may drop from any course without it being listed on his/her transcript so long as he or she remains enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and the drop occurs before the deadline determined by the academic calendar. If the course is part of the Core Program, the student must obtain the signature of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the purpose of verifying consultation. After the official drop deadline, a student may request a withdrawal from a course by submitting a petition to the Scholarly Standing Committee through the Registrar’s Office. If the committee grants the withdrawal, the transcript will show a grade of “W” for the course in question. If the withdrawal is denied, the student must remain in the course and the grade earned is recorded on the transcript.
