Headed by Gary Kelly, Associate Dean for Institutional Diversity, the OID serves as the hub of campus diversity activities and as an additional adviser for students of color. This office coordinates campus diversity planning with a variety of committees and provides funding for cultural programs sponsored by student clubs. The OID also hosts the Summer Institute, an intensive 2.5 week summer residential experience that offers a competitive edge through an early introduction to HMC.
Multicultural Ally Program (MAP)
MAP provides an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to learn about people different from themselves, interact with others about topics that are difficult to discuss, and take action to promote social equity. MAP Publicly promotes the value of differences among people at HMC and demonstrates how these differences are essential to the success of the college. MAP “training” is held every semester and all members of the community are encouraged to attend. Contact the Office of Institutional Diversity for more information.
Asian and Pacific Islander Sponsor Program at Mudd (API SPAM)
API SPAM provides support for new Asian American and Pacific Islander students through peer sponsorship and targeted enrichment activities. The group offers informal peer guidance during the first year of transition to HMC. It also hosts a welcome program during the admitted students visitation program and Orientation as well as regularly scheduled social/cultural trips off-campus. Contact information available through the Dean of Students Office.
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
Founded in 2003, the HMC NSBE chapter develops programs for increasing Black and other ethnic minority participation in the fields of engineering, science and mathematics. Contact the Office of Institutional Diversity for more information.
PRISM
PRISM, People Respecting Individuals' Sexualities at Mudd, is HMC's gay-straight alliance. Chartered by ASHMC in the fall of 1999, PRISM meetings provide a comfortable gathering place for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and straight students, faculty and staff to meet and discuss the LGBT experience here. The group works to make Mudd a place where all people are welcomed, safe and respected, regardless of their sexuality. PRISM, while specific to HMC, has ties to the other 5-C LGBT organizations, including the Queer Resource Center at Pomona and its Queer, Questioning and Allied Mentor Program (QQAMP). Contact the Dean of Students Office for more information.
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers promotes the development of Hispanics in engineering, science, and other technical professions to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity, and social equity. A local chapter of SHPE/SALSA was established at HMC in 2004. Contact the Office of Institutional Diversity for more information.
Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
It is SWE's mission to stimulate women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, and to demonstrate the value of diversity. SWE also hopes to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life for all. The HMC chapter of SWE hosts professional and social programs for all engineering students. It also sponsors a day-long program for high school girls to experience science, mathematics and engineering education on HMC's campus. SWE contact information is available through the Department of Engineering.
