Guy Gerbick has worn many hats since joining Harvey Mudd College in 1997. When he started, he coordinated new student orientation and compiled the Mudd Blotter, a weekly email on security matters. In 1999, Guy began as assistant dean of students/dean of residential life, and in 2003, became HMC’s associate dean of students.
Guy's responsibilities at Mudd focus on proctor selection, training and supervision. With the proctors, he counsels students and aids those in crisis. In consultation with dorm presidents and the Dormitory Affairs Committee (DAC) of ASHMC, HMC’s student government, Guy implements room draw, new student placement and room changes during the academic year. With the DAC, he identifies and addresses student and college concerns with campus life. Guy also designs and updates the Office of the Dean of Students webpages; serves on HMC’s Incident Management Team; and closely collaborates with the Facilities and Maintenance Office and other Claremont College residential deans on dorm services and policies.
In 1996, Guy came to Claremont to pursue a Ph.D. in higher education at Claremont Graduate University (CGU). For three years he interned with the Student Deans Committee of The Claremont Colleges, which included stints at Claremont McKenna, HMC and Pitzer. During this time, Guy researched faculty trends with Jack Schuster and diversity issues with Daryl Smith, co-authoring Diversity Works: The Emerging Picture of How Students Benefit. Guy’s primary academic interest centers on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues in higher education.
Guy holds a B.A. in political science from Wittenberg University and a master’s degree in student development in higher education from the University of Maine. He worked in residential life, student activities and admissions at Lawrence University, Humboldt State University, Oberlin College and the University of Maine, before heading to Claremont.
