Gary Kelly, associate dean for institutional diversity, began at Harvey Mudd College in the summer of 2007. He is responsible for overseeing the HMC Summer Institute, advising student groups, creating and facilitating a broad range of activities that promote diversity and inclusion, and chairing a number of subcommittees charged with fulfilling the President’s Strategic Vision for Diversity.
Prior to joining HMC, Gary spent eight years as an associate dean of admissions at Pomona College. There, he was instrumental in helping the college increase its number of underrepresented, first-generation and low-income students. Gary was also a strong cultural bridge builder, regularly coordinating activities with the Office of Black Student Affairs, Chicano/Latino Student Affairs and Asian-American Resource Center.
One of Gary’s most rewarding tasks at Pomona College was the coordination of the Minority Student Action Program, which encompassed a comprehensive set of initiatives to support the outreach, recruitment, enrollment and retention of students of color. He also co-founded the Pomona College Black Achievement Network, a collaboration of faculty, staff and community members who provide a variety of academic and social resources to black students at Pomona.
Gary’s interests include performing (he was a cast member of Steve Silver’s “Beach Blanket Babylon” in San Francisco for four years) and athletics. He is also the president of his own human relations consulting company.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1984, and had a distinguished career at the university in a variety of student affairs divisions, including residential life, student activities, alumni relations and academic support services.
