FUNDING FOR SCHOLARLY AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY
(Fiscal Year 2009-2010
)

For the coming fiscal year, we expect funds will be available from the following internal sources: the Beckman Endowment, College Budgetary Funds, The Rose Hills Foundation and the Baker Foundation. While not certain, additional gifts may be received to further support scholarly activity.

Based on currently anticipated funds for this academic year, on the order of 20 awards ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 will be recommended for funding by the Faculty Research Committee.

In recent years the total sums awarded annually from available sources have been:

  • Beckman Program – typically $70,000 to $80,000 and supports from 6 to 8 projects.
  • The Rose Hills Foundation – provided $50,000 in 2008 and supported 8 projects
  • Baker Foundation – provided $50,000 in 2008
  • The Center for Environmental Studies has provided annual funding of about $25,000 for 3 to 4 projects.

CURRENT RESEARCH GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

The following opportunities are currently available to HMC faculty, provided that they meet the general eligibility guidelines:

General Eligibility
Projects must involve at least one HMC faculty member who is a full-time regular appointee. Proposals for joint research projects are accepted if at least one of the participants is a full-time regular HMC faculty member. Only full-time HMC faculty are eligible for stipend support. Though some internally funded programs allow for summer faculty stipends, no one may receive more than one faculty stipend from internally funded programs in any given summer. Moreover, no one may ask for an internally funded stipend in addition to any externally funded stipend. Funds for faculty stipends, while available, are quite limited given the general emphasis on supporting students. These funds are not available for course development.

For faculty who received previous internal funding, consideration of a new proposal will be contingent on the receipt of the final report describing the funded project. Final reports may be submitted using the online form

Unless a final report has been submitted prior to the submission of a new proposal, the proposal will be returned without review. Proposals that do not follow the instructions will be returned without review.

Beckman Endowment and General Support Research Grants
Proposals for Beckman Endowment and general support research grants are reviewed and recommended for funding by HMC's Faculty Research Committee. In recent years, the Beckman Endowment has provided in annual support for six to eight projects. General support funds, such as those from The Rose Hills Foundation and the Baker Foundation, provided $100,000 for about 16 projects in 2008. Learn more…
