Grants from the National Science Foundation make up the largest share of external support for faculty research at HMC. Faculty are encouraged to become familiar with the NSF website and to sign up for the electronic newsletter, MyNSF, which can be programmed to send email announcements of program solicitations of particular interest.

The following are other grant programs that may be of special interest to faculty:

AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships
A yearlong fellowship for faculty with a federal agency in Washington, DC. The purpose of the program is to create links between federal decision-makers and scientific professionals. The next deadline is Dec. 15, 2008, for participation during the 2009-10 academic year.

American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (ACS PRF)
The ACS PRF is limited to consideration of proposals for fundamental research topics that are directly related to petroleum.

Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation
The Dreyfus Foundation operates a number of programs in support of chemistry, chemical engineering and related sciences.

Fulbright Scholar Program
The Fulbright Scholar Program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).  The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program:  grants for U.S. faculty to lecture, do research, participate in seminars at universities in foreign countries. Deadline Aug. 1 (annually) – i.e., August 1, 2009, to go abroad in 2010-11

The Haynes Foundation
The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation supports social science research on topics relevant to the greater Los Angeles area. The foundation’s Faculty Fellowship Program offers grants of up to $10,000.

National Endowment for the Humanities

• Fellowships Program – fellowships support individual researchers pursuing advanced research of value to scholars and the general public in the humanities. Fellowships support continuous full-time work for a period of six to twelve months. As of November 2008, the deadline for 2009 had not yet been announced, but is likely to be May 1, 2009, for projects beginning January 2010.
• Summer Stipends – summer stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research in the humanities. The stipend is intended to support full-time work for a period of two months. The research project may be at any stage of development. As of November 2008, the deadline for 2009 had not yet been announced, but is likely to be Oct. 1, 2009, for projects beginning May 2010.

National Institutes of Health Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Program
AREA grants support research in the biomedical and behavioral sciences that involves undergraduate students. Deadlines are Feb. 25, June 25 and Oct. 25.

National Research Council – Research Associateship Programs
The National Research Council administers competitive post-doctoral and senior research awards on behalf of 31 U.S. government research agencies with facilities at more than 100 locations throughout the U.S. and abroad. Awards are available for scientists and engineers at all stages of their careers. Research associates receive annual stipends from the NRC ranging from $41,000 to $70,000 for recent graduates and proportionally higher for Senior Associates. Annual application deadlines are Feb. 1, May 1, Aug. 1 and Nov. 1.

Research Corporation
The Research Corporation’s Cottrell College Science Award Program grants awards ranging from $20,000 to $45,000 to researchers at primarily undergraduate institutions. Investigators must be in astronomy, chemistry or physics.

Sloan Foundation Research Fellowships
The Sloan Foundation research fellowships support faculty within six years of their Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience or computational and evolutionary molecular biology, or a related interdisciplinary field. Candidates must be nominated by department heads or other senior researchers. The deadline is Sept. 15 (annually).
